I was brn missing my left hand yet I learned t adapt. One f my earliest memries is my father trying t teach me t tie my shes. I gently pushed him aside and figured ut a way t d it with ne hand. My parents tried t make me feel rdinary, but the reality was inescapable.
When I was 13, an age when kids are already very self-cnscius, I remembered getting n the bus and ne f the ther kids stared just a little t lng at my left arm. I felt a sudden urge t hide my hand. I had decided that if peple knew abut my missing hand, they wuld nt want t be arund me anymre.
Making friends was challenging enugh, but finding lve was particularly discuraging. As I started dating, I made effrts t hide my difference. Eventually we’d reach a pint in the relatinship where I knew I had t tell the truth. I’d think ver the “big reveal” and build it up in my mind fr days. When I had gathered the curage, I let ut my secret ver the phne and hung up in a panic. Even when I received a call, I culdn’t face discussing it, relying n the answering machine.
Everyne I shared this with — friend, c-wrker r byfriend — said kind things like, “Yu shuldn’t hide it.” r “It’s n big deal.” But their wrds didn’t matter t me. The nly wrds that really mattered were the nes I was telling myself, that stry f hw I was unwrthy f lve.
At 28, tired f hiding, I met smene special. Fr the first time, I allwed smene t really hld, lk at, take pictures f, tuch and lve my limb — lve me.
That relatinship ended after ten years, but I kept the self-lve and self-respect I learned frm it. Frm that pint n, I saw my difference as smething unique and beautiful abut me, smething that shuld be shwn, nt hidden.

Elephants, the largest land mammals n the planet, are magnificent creatures and turists rush t African cuntries t see them. Due t very successful cnservatin effrts, the African elephant ppulatin in cuntries like Kenya is grwing. In the cuntry’s ppular Tsav Natinal Park, elephant numbers went frm arund 6,000 t almst 15,000 in just several years.
While this is great news fr cnservatinists, it’s nt seen that way by farmers wh live in between tw parts f the park. The human ppulatin has als expanded and this means that it affects elephants’ feeding and migratin areas. This has led t cnflicts between humans and elephants, smetimes resulting in elephant deaths.
Nw a new slutin using hneybees has been fund t keep the elephants away frm farms. This unlikely slutin is part f a lng-running prject frm the Save the Elephants rganizatin. The sund f African hneybees prevents elephants. Nw yellw-painted beehive (蜂巢) fences prtect sme f the lcal plts. The prject is supprting 40 farmers whse crps are prtected by 15 hives. Each f the hives is strung n a wire a few meters ff the grund. This prtects them frm insects and allws them t shake if they are disturbed by an elephant, which starts the bees making sunds. This scares the elephant away.
A nine-year study mnitred 26 farms that were prtected by the beehive fences in tw villages near the park. During the peak grwing seasns — Nvember t January frm 2014 t 2020 — 3,027 elephants apprached the fences and mst were prevented. During the drught f 2017, which reduced the number f bees in the hives by 75 percent, elephants were still prevented 76 percent f the time.
Save the Elephants is nw prmting beehive fences in 15 cuntries in Africa and Asia. But besides preventing elephants, the beehive fences can prvide ther benefits t cmmunities. Bees prvide pllinatin (授粉) services which can increase crp prductin and hney frm the hives that farmers can sell t increase their incme.
While this slutin isn’t perfect, and is subject t the negative effects f climate change and drught, it des shw that elephants and humans can share the land withut cnflicts.
      28. What is the main purpse f the beehive fences?
      A. T prvide habitats fr African hneybees.B. T attract mre turists t Tsav Natinal Park.
      C. T increase the number f elephants in the wild.D. T reduce cnflicts between humans and elephants.
      29. Hw d the beehive fences wrk?
      A. The sund f disturbed bees scares elephants away.
      B. The fences are painted yellw t drive away elephants.
      C. The fences physically blck elephants frm entering farms.
      D. The hneybees directly attack elephants t prtect the crps.
      30. What des the underlined wrd “plts” in paragraph 3 prbably mean?
      A. Stries r plans.B. Small pieces f farmland.
      C. Hidden traps fr elephants.D. Beehive cnstructin designs.
      31. What additinal benefit d the beehive fences prvide besides prtecting crps?
      A. They prvide hney as fd and reduce hunger.
B They help fight against climate change in the area.
      C. They bst crp prductin with bees’ pllinatin.
      D. They’ve successfully remved the pverty f farmers.
      D
Are yu a lgical thinker, r wuld yu say that yu’re mre free-spirited and artistic? If yu’re the frmer, smebdy’s prbably tld yu at sme pint that yu’re a left-brained persn, and if yu’re the latter, right-brained. The idea that the right half f the brain is the creative half and the left half is the analytical (分析的) half and that ur individual characteristics are determined by which half is dminant is widespread in ppular psychlgy. Hwever, this idea is a fictin.
Althugh we all bviusly have different persnalities and talents, there’s n reasn t believe these differences can be explained by the dminance f ne half f the brain ver the ther half. Recent research using brain imaging technlgy hasn’t fund any evidence f hemispheric (脑半球的) dminance. Math, fr example, requires lgical thught and, thus, is generally said t be cnnected with the left brain. But mathematics invlves a highly creative effrt in additin t being a lgical ne. S wuld a gifted mathematician be a right-brained r a left-brained persn?
If there’s n evidence fr the fictin f right-brained and left-brained peple, why d s many peple accept it? Perhaps it just makes intuitive (直觉的) sense that peple’s brains wuld be dminant n ne side r the ther just as their hands, feet, r eyes are. It may als have smething t d with ur seemingly unlimited appetite that allws us t srt urselves (and ur friends) int “types” based n ur emtinal and intellectual characteristics.
When peple are ffered general descriptive statements that are presented as individualized descriptins f their wn persnalities, they tend t accept them as meaningful and true, especially if the statements are psitive. The “insights” they generate are bth universal and cngenial. After all, wh wuld reject a descriptin f themselves as “artistic and creative” r “reasnable and analytical”? The fictin is ppular, in the end, because it gives us a “scientific” way t talk abut ur favrite subject — urselves.
      32. Which is a cmmn belief abut peple’s individual characteristics?
      A. A lgical thinker is right-brained.
      B. Our right brain and left brain wrk the same.
      C. The right half f the brain is the analytical half.
      D. The dminant half f brain determines ne’s characteristics.
      33. Why des the authr mentin mathematics in paragraph 2?
      A. T shw that math is a lgical subject.
B T argue that creativity is irrelevant in analytical thinking.
      C. T prve that left-brained peple are better at prblem-slving.
      D. T prve persnality and talent differences aren’t due t hemispheric dminance.
      34. Why d many peple believe in the left-brain/ right-brain thery?
      A. This thery is widespread and ppular.
      B. Scientific studies have cnfirmed its accuracy.
      C. It prvides a way fr them t srt persnalities.
      D. Brain imaging technlgy has shwn clear hemispheric differences.
      35. Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title fr the passage?
      A. Why Left-Brained Peple Are Smarter?
      B. The Science f Math: Left r Right Brain?
      C. The Truth Behind Hemispheric Dminance
      D. Ways t Develp Bth Lgical and Creative Thinking
