With the glbal ppulatin increasing, the demand fr meat is putting pressure n the envirnment. T tackle
this issue, artificial meat, als knwn as cultured meat, is emerging as a sustainable alternative. In recent years,
Chinese scientists have made significant prgress in this field, cmbining cutting-edge bitechnlgy with
traditinal fd science.
At the cre f artificial meat prductin is cellular agriculture a prcess that grws animal cells in a
cntrlled envirnment. In ne grundbreaking experiment cnducted by researchers at Nanjing Agricultural
University, muscle stem cells were extracted frm a pig. These cells were then placed in a nutrient-rich slutin (溶
液) designed t mimic the envirnment inside an animal’s bdy, matching the cnditins needed fr the cells t
grw. Over several weeks, the cells multiplied and frmed muscle fibers, resulting in a small piece f lab-grwn
meat.
The research team faced several challenges during the prcess. Fr example, they had t adjust the nutrient
slutin t ensure the cells grew efficiently. Additinally, they experimented with different bireactr designs t
create the right texture and taste fr the meat. After mnths f trial and errr, the team successfully prduced a
piece f prk that clsely resembled traditinal meat in bth flavr and appearance.
T test its quality, the artificial meat was cked and tasted by a grup f vlunteers. The results were
prmising: mst participants culd nt distinguish it frm cnventinal meat. This breakthrugh culd reduce
greenhuse gas emissins and land use assciated with traditinal meat prductin.
Hwever, artificial meat still has hurdles t vercme, such as high prductin csts and public acceptance.
Despite these challenges, China’s achievements in artificial meat technlgy are paving the way fr a mre
sustainable future.
8. What is the main purpse f prducing artificial meat?
A. T prvide a cheaper alternative.
B. T develp meat with better taste.
第 5页/共 11页
C. T address envirnmental prblems.
D. T prmte bitechnlgy innvatins.
9. What challenge did the researchers face during the prcess?
A. Testing meat quality. B. Harvesting animal cells.
C. Achieving prper meat features. D. Measuring cell grwth efficiency.
10. What can be inferred abut the future f artificial meat?
A. It will take the place f traditinal meat.
B. It may take time t gain widespread apprval.
C. China will lead the glbal market in this field.
D. High prductin csts will n lnger be an issue.
11. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
A. The Future f Meat Prductin
B. China’s Advance in Cultured Meat
C. Green Benefits f Lab-Grwn Meat

Envirnmental DNA (eDNA) has becme a crucial tl in eclgical research ver recent years. By analyzing
water, sil, r ther envirnmental materials fr DNA pieces, researchers can tell that thusands f different species
have been in an area withut having t bserve the actual species passing thrugh.
T date, this eDNA prcess has mstly been emplyed t detect marine (海洋的) creatures, insects, and ther
wildlife. Hwever, accrding t a paper published in Nature Eclgy & Evlutin, this technique culd just as
easily be applied t spt humans.
An internatinal team f researchers based at the University f Flrida, USA, demnstrated that human
genmic (基因组的) infrmatin can be easily detected in eDNA samples cllected frm water, sand, and even the
air. While this capability culd have practical applicatins, such as aiding in the search fr missing persns r
mnitring public health, the researchers highlight significant mral cncerns. These cncerns include the lack f
agreement frm individuals fr their DNA t be cllected, ptential breaches (侵犯) f privacy, and the risk f
genetic infrmatin being used fr cmmercial purpses.
This issue is particularly challenging fr the field f eDNA, which relies n pen and easily accessible data.
“It is standard practice in science t make these data publicly available. Hwever, this als means that if human

infrmatin is nt screened ut, anyne culd access this infrmatin,” says senir authr Prfessr David Duffy, a
wildlife disease genmics researcher at the University f Flrida. “This raises issues arund permissin. D we
need t ask permissin t cllect these samples? Shuld we bring in sme cntrls t remve human genetic data?”
“Whenever we make a technlgical advancement, there are bth beneficial and cncerning ptential uses.
This situatin is n different,” Duffy explains. “We are raising these issues early s that plicymakers and sciety
have adequate time t develp suitable guidelines.”
12. What is the primary use f eDNA in eclgical research?
A. Identifying species present in an area. B. Mnitring species evlutin prcesses.
C. Imprving living cnditins fr wildlife. D. Sampling insects directly in their habitats.
13. Why is the accessibility f eDNA data a ptential prblem?
A. It ignres practical applicatins f eDNA data.
B. It may lead t unchecked genetic engineering.
C. It culd result in misuse f human genetic data.
D. It raises cncerns abut wildlife disease research.
14. What des Duffy suggest peple cncerned d?
A. T develp ptential applicatins. B. T sample genetic infrmatin.
C. T highlight advanced technlgy. D. T establish apprpriate regulatins.
15. What is the best title fr the text?
A. eDNA: A New Frntier in Eclgical Mnitring
B. eDNA: Human Detectin Meets Privacy Challenges
C. eDNA: A Breakthrugh in Marine Research Techniques
D. eDNA: Transfrming Our Cmprehensin f Bidiversity

designed t mimic the envirnment inside an animal’s bdy, matching the cnditins needed fr the cells t grw.
Over several weeks, the cells multiplied and frmed muscle fibers, resulting in a small piece f lab-grwn meat.

A. It will take the place f traditinal meat.
B. It may take time t gain widespread apprval.
C. China will lead the glbal market in this field.
D. High prductin csts will n lnger be an issue.
11. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
