They bserved that chimps use their hands and feet t prduce rapid-fire drumming, ften n buttress rts, during activities like resting, travelling r making threat displays. The researchers fund that chimps drum much faster than mst humans. “The lngest drum we recrded was ver 5 secnds, while the shrtest was less than 0.1 secnds,” says Hbaiter.
Despite these differences chimps shw sme f the cre building blcks f human musical rhythm (节奏), says team member Vesta Eleuteri at the University f Vienna, Austria .“They drum with rhythm, as ppsed t randmly, and they use a typical rhythm bserved acrss musical cultures called ischrny, cnsisting f hits that are regularly spaced, like the ticking f a clck.” The team als fund that the tw subspecies drummed with different rhythms.
Miguel Llrente at the University f Girna in Spain says the idea that different subspecies shw distinct drumming styles is appealing. “It pens the dr t thinking abut these patterns nt just as individual habits, but ptentially as cultural differences in hw grups use drumming as a cmmunicative tl.”
“We dn’t mean that chimp drumming shws the cmplexity f mdern human musical rhythms,” says Hbaiter. “But this is the first time that we’ve been able t shw that they share the same rhythmic building blcks, making it likely that rhythm was a part f ur scial wrld lng befre we became human.” “Until recently, it was argued that rhythmicity was unique t humans,” says Gisela Kaplan at the University f New England, Australia. “We nw have plenty f evidence that this is nt the case.”

Learning hw t regulate negative emtins like anxiety culd ease chrnic (慢性的) pain. Scientists have fund that a frm f therapy (疗法) that partly fcuses n tlerating pain relieved nging discmfrt mre effectively than existing treatments.
“Chrnic pain is mre than a sensry experience; it’s incredibly emtinal,” says Nell Nrman-Ntt at the University f New Suth Wales, Australia. “We see increased levels f anxiety and depressin in up t abut 80 percent f peple with chrnic pain.” This leads t a “vicius cycle”, where pre-pain increases negative emtins, which then wrsen pain, she says.
T see if they culd break the cycle, Nrman-Ntt and her team used a prgramme that fcused n mindfulness, emtin regulatin and pain tlerance. Eighty-nine peple with chrnic pain, lasting 16 years n average, were randmised t receive either the prgramme, delivered by a therapist thrugh an eight-week nline curse, while cntinuing with any treatments they were already receiving, such as medicatin r physical therapy, r t just cntinue with their usual treatment.
Nine weeks later, thse in the therapy grup experienced an imprvement in emtinal regulatin f abut 5 pints mre than thse in the cntrl grup. The intensity f their pain als started t lessen at week 9, and by 21 weeks they experienced significantly less pain than thse in the cntrl grup.
“I think that’s interesting and prmising,” says Benedict Alter at the University f Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It culd als help peple with limited access t inpersn care, he says. “It’s great that they did this as internet-based. It’s a huge prblem that there are small numbers f prviders wh d therapy, and they tend t be in urban areas.”
Exactly hw the therapy reduces pain is unclear, says Alter, but “at any given pain intensity, if yu had better emtinal regulatin, peple’s verall lives wuld be better: less suffering, less functinal limitatin. I think pain intensity decreases as everything gets better.” The mechanism culd be uncvered in larger studies, he says.
12. What des “vicius cycle” refer t?
A. Peple with chrnic pain are increasing.
B Regulating negative emtins eases chrnic pain.
C. Chrnic pain and negative emtins wrsen each ther.
D. The new therapy is mre effective than existing treatments.
13. Hw did Nrman-Ntt’s team prve the therapy’s effectiveness?
A. By bserving the usual treatment.B. By cntrasting week 9 and week 21 results.
C. By stpping usual treatments fr participants.D. By cmparing therapy and cntrl grup results.
14. Why is the therapy “prmising” accrding t Benedict Alter?
A. It prvides training t the urban therapists.B. It fcuses n in-persn therapy imprvements.
C. It aids thse with limited in-persn care access.D. It equips patients in rural areas with internet skills.
15. What might the future studies fcus n?
