Often cnducted in remte and dangerus envirnments, shark research requires time and mney. But that wrk
is paying ff as researchers cntinually identify new species f sharks, such as thse that can walk n the cean flr
and glw in the dark. These research-riented rganizatins are explring the wrld's reefs, seas, castlines, and
ceans t ultimately benefit shark cnservatin.
Atlantic White Shark Cnservancy
Based n the suthern tip f Cape Cd, the cnservancy's main missin is white shark research and educatin.
Offering expeditins t see the animals in their natural habitat, educatinal Shark Centers pen t the public, and
yuth science prgrams. The nn-prfit als runs the Sharktivity app where user-reprted shark sightings help
researchers learn mre abut shark travel and behavir and keep sharks and humans safe frm each ther.
Beneath The Waves
Since 2013, Beneath The Waves has used science and technlgy t prmte cean health and cnservatin
plicy. Their threatened species initiative cllects research n sharks using tls such as tags, sensrs, drnes, and
satellites t better understand shark bilgy and mvement. The nn-prfit launched the first lng-term study f large-
scale shark sanctuaries and discvered deep-sea "htspts” fr sharks in the Caribbean.
MarAlliance
Headquartered in Hustn, MarAlliance cnducts research in trpical seas t supprt wildlife cnservatin in
places such as the Gulf f Mexic, Pacific Ocean, and Caribbean Sea. Their wrk includes identifying ptential sites
fr marine prtected areas frm fishing training lcal fishing cmmunities, and mnitring ppulatin levels f
threatened marine life, like sme species f sharks.
Fins Attached
While the Clrad-based nn-prfit aims t prtect the health f the entire cean, much f its research fcuses
n sharks since their psitin at the tp f the marine fd chain influences the health f the entire ecsystem. Fins

Emma Pattersn, an 88-year-ld resident f Mntgmery Cunty, Maryland, has devted her life t the
extrardinary missin f fstering(收养)children.
Her fstering jurney began quite unexpectedly. As her wn children grew up, they started bringing hme friends
wh needed mre than just a place t hang ut—they needed care. These children were ften hungry, lacked prper
clthing, r faced neglect at hme. Emma, with her generus spirit, didn't hesitate t pen her drs and her heart.
What started with helping a few friends f her children quickly turned int a lifelng cmmitment t fstering.
Over the years, Emma welcmed nearly 40 fster children int her hme. At ne pint, she was caring fr as many as
9
children simultaneusly(同时).
Each child brught their wn set f challenges and needs, but Emma faced each situatin with firm dedicatin.
Her hme became a shelter fr thse wh had nwhere else t turn t, prviding nt just the basics f fd and shelter
but als the emtinal supprt and stability that many f these children had never experienced.
Despite these challenges, Emma cmmitted t fstering each child until adulthd. She prvided a stable hme
envirnment, guiding them thrugh schl and helping them achieve milestnes they might have therwise missed
As Emma cntinued her jurney, her influence extended beynd her hme. The children she fstered grew up
and went n t lead successful lives, prf f the strng fundatin she prvided. Many f them stayed in tuch,
expressing their gratitude and acknwledging the crucial rle Emma played in their lives. Her hme was mre than a
temprary shelter. It was the starting pint fr a brighter future fr many.
Mntgmery Cunty hnred her fr her exceptinal service and dedicatin, recgnizing the cuntless hurs and
the bundless lve she invested in each child she fstered. Emma's stry serves as an inspiratin t thers, shwing
that ne persn's kindness and cmmitment can indeed change the wrld, ne child at a time.
2
4. What mtivated Emma t begin fstering children?
A. Her wn children's schl task.
C. The demand f her cmmunity.
B. Her lng wish t fster children.
D. Her witness t the children's situatin,

A team f early childhd researchers examined hw neighbrhd pprtunity—the sciecnmic,
educatinal, health, and envirnmental cnditins relevant t child health and develpment—is assciated with infant
(
婴儿)brain activity and cgnitive develpment.
The researchers fund that infants in neighbrhds with mre pprtunities have greater brain functin at six
mnths f age. In areas with better educatinal pprtunities, these brain differences are als related t better
cgnitin at 12 mnths ld.
The researchers cllected their data frm 65 infants in cmmunity pediatric(小儿科的)practices in the Bstn
and Ls Angeles areas. The team examined whether assciatins between neighbrhd pprtunity and children's
cgnitive develpment at 12 mnths f age culd be explained by differences in brain activity at 6 mnths f age,
measured by electrencephalgraphy(脑电图学)(EEG). Cgnitive develpment was measured using the Mullen
Scales f Early Learning(MSEL), a standardized play-based develpmental assessment.
The researchers fund that higher levels f neighbrhd pprtunity are assciated with greater abslute EEG
pwer in mid- t high-frequency bands in six mnths ld infants. These EEG measurements are related t better
language and cgnitive scres later in childhd, suggesting a neurprtective rle f living in higher pprtunity
neighbrhds early in life. The team als fund that higher levels f educatinal pprtunity, specifically, are
assciated with better MSEL scres. This means that neighbrhds with mre educatinal pprtunities, like high
quality center-based care, may prvide mre resurces t get kids engaged in cgnitively simulating activities and
enhance their develpment.
"Prir wrk has fcused n the rle f sciecnmic disadvantages in child develpment. Our study aims t
shift the cnversatin twards slutins fr imprving the envirnments that kids experience in early childhd t
supprt their develpment and address inequalities," said Mei Elansary, MD, MPhil, an Assistant Prfessr f
Pediatrics at Bstn University. "Given that race and ethnicity have been strngly assciated with differential access
t high pprtunity neighbrhds, it is imprtant t think abut ways t prmte access t these places fr all
families."
2
8. What advantage d infants in neighbrhds with higher pprtunity levels have?
A. They grw mre quickly.
B. Their cgnitin develps better.
D. They have easier access t wealth.
C. They have fewer health issues.
2
9. Hw did researchers assess cgnitive develpment in infants?
A. By mnitring EEG patterns.
C. By having standardized tests.
B. Thrugh pediatric check-ups.
D. By bserving scial interactins.
3
0. What aspect f the research is talked abut in paragraph 4?
A. Its result.
B. Its purpse.
D. Its applicatin.
C. Its prcess.
3
1. What can plicymakers d accrding t the result f the study?
A. Update current ecnmic cnditins.
C. Imprve schl facilities natinwide.
B. Invest mre mney n educatin.
D. Create fair neighbrhd pprtunities.

UChicag Pritzker Mlecular Engineering Prf. Y. Shirley Meng's Labratry fr Energy Strage and
Cnversin(LESC)has created the wrld's first ande-free sdium(无阳极钠)slid-state battery. With this
research, the LESC has brught the reality f inexpensive, fast- charging, high-capacity batteries fr electric vehicles
and grid strage clser than ever.
"Althugh there have been previus sdium, slid-state, and ande-free batteries, n ne has been able t
successfully cmbine these three ideas until nw," said UC San Dieg PhD candidate Graysn Deysher, first authr f
a new paper utlining the team's wrk.
The paper demnstrates a new sdium battery architecture with stable cycling fr several hundred cycles. By
remving the ande and using inexpensive, abundant sdium instead f lithium(锂), this new frm f battery will
be mre affrdable and envirnmentally friendly t prduce. Thrugh its innvative slid-state design, the battery als
will be safe and pwerful. This wrk is bth an advance in the science and a necessary step t fill the battery scaling
gap needed t shift the wrld ecnmy ff fssil fuels.
The lithium cmmnly used fr batteries isn't that cmmn. It makes up abut 20 parts per millin f the Earth's
crust(地壳), cmpared t sdium, which makes up 20,000 parts per millin. This scarcity, cmbined with the
rising demand fr the lithium-in batteries fr laptps, phnes and EVs, have sent prices skyrcketing, putting the
needed batteries further ut f reach.
Sdium, cmmn in cean water and sda ash mining, is an inherently mre envirnmentally friendly battery
material. The LESC research has made it a pwerful ne as well.
"Sdium slid-state batteries are usually seen as a far-ff-in-the-future technlgy, but we hpe that ur wrk
can encurage mre push int the sdium area by demnstrating that it can indeed wrk well, even better than the
lithium versin in sme cases," Deysher said.
The ultimate gal? Meng expects an energy future with a variety f clean, inexpensive battery ptins that stre
renewable energy, scaled t fit sciety's needs.
3
2. What d we knw abut the new sdium battery?
A. It's n sale nw. B. It's advanced.
3. Hw may the sdium battery affect the glbal ecnmy?
C. It charges slw.
D. It's expensive.
3
A. It will make batteries mre expensive.
B. It will shift the frm f wrld ecnmy.
C. It will meet the need fr EVs.
D. It will reduce dependence n fssil fuels.
3
4. Which can best replace the underlined part "scarcity” in paragraph 4?
A. shrtage B. strage C. strategy D. surce
5. What des Prf. Meng aim t d in the future f energy strage?
3
A. Find mre surces f material fr battery.
B. Put sdium battery technlgy t market.
C. Offer diverse clean cheap battery chices.
D. Scale t fit sciety's need fr develpment.

Dear Bruce,
I am writing t share with yu ur study trip t the lcal nature reserve last Friday. It was such a fascinating
experience! We spent the whle day explring the diverse ecsystem and learning abut the imprtance f nature
reserves in preserving bidiversity.
During the trip, we bserved varius species f birds and plants that thrive in the nature reserve. Our guide
explained hw nature reserves help filter pllutants frm the air and prtect water and sil frm ersin. We even
cllected water samples and examined micrrganisms under micrscpes, which was educatinal.
Persnally, I was deeply impressed by the peaceful atmsphere and the harmny between humans and nature in
the nature reserves. It made me realize hw crucial it is t cnserve such habitats fr future generatins.
Lking frward t hearing frm yu sn.
Yurs sincerely,
Li Hua
