It had been ver 10 years since the three sisters were last tgether, and tears welled up in their eyes. The eldest, 110-year-ld Rubye Cx, stayed warm under a red plush blanket as her “kid” sisters, 104-year-ld Ruth Branum and 101-year-ld Rse Shlss, held her hands. They shared stries, and laughed heartily. This verdue reunin was made pssible by a nnprfit rganizatin Wish f a Lifetime, which flew Rse frm Flrida and Ruth frm Oklahma t Rhde Island.
The charity is the passin prject f Jeremy Blm, a frmer Olympic skier and NFL player, wh was impressed, during his years travelling the wrld as an athlete, by hw much mre ther cuntries and cultures seemed t respect and celebrate their elders than what he’d witnessed in America. “Smetimes we frget here that their dreams still matter,” Blm, 43, reflects.
At 15, during a skiing trip t Japan, Blm was deeply mved when passengers bwed and helped an elderly wman nt a bus. That mment planted a seed, which tk 10 years t grw int Wish f a Lifetime. Inspired by the Make-A-Wish Fundatin, which fulfills requests fr critically ill children, Blm aimed t fulfill the wishes f senir citizens.
Fr the first wish he granted, Blm arranged fr airplane tickets fr a wman named Nancy s she culd visit her dying daughter, and say gdbye in persn.

Each year, mre than 1.2 billin smartphnes are prduced glbally. Prducing them nt nly cnsumes valuable natural resurces but als releases a significant amunt f CO2 int the atmsphere. With rapid tech develpment, users replace their still-functinal phnes n average every 2 t 3 years. At best, ld devices are recycled; at wrst, they end up in landfills.
Researchers frm the University f Tartu have an alternative slutin. Instead f discarding ld smartphnes, scientists have transfrmed them int miniature data centers.
“Innvatin ften begins with a new way f thinking abut the ld, re-imagining its rle in shaping the future,” explained Huber Flres, Assciate Prfessr f Pervasive Cmputing. They demnstrated that ld smartphnes can be successfully repurpsed int tiny data centers capable f efficiently prcessing and string data. They als fund that building such a data center is remarkably inexpensive — arund 8 eurs per device.
In the first stage f the prject, the researchers remved the phnes’ batteries and replaced them with external pwer surces t reduce the risk f chemical leakage. Then, fur phnes were cnnected tgether, fitted with 3D-printed casings (外壳) and hlders, and turned int a wrking prttype ready t be reused.
The prttype was then tested underwater, where it participated in marine life mnitring by helping t cunt different sea species. Nrmally, these kinds f tasks require a diver t recrd a vide and bring it t the surface fr analysis. But with the prttype, the whle prcess was dne autmatically underwater.
These tiny data centers have a wide range f applicatins. Fr example, they culd be used in urban envirnments like bus stps t cllect real-time data n the number f passengers, which culd then be used t ptimize public transprtatin netwrks.
The team’s results shw that ld electrnics can be given a new purpse, cntributing t the develpment f mre envirnmentally friendly and sustainable digital slutins. As Assciate Prfessr Ulrich Nrbisrath said, “Sustainability is nt just abut preserving the future — it’s abut re-imagining the present, where yesterday’s devices becme tmrrw’s pprtunities.”
      8. What des paragraph l mainly cnvey?
      A. The necessity t dispse f ld smartphnes.B. The cnsumptin habits f smartphne users.
      C. The difficulty in recycling ld smartphnes.D. The imprtance f saving natural resurces.
      9. What des the underlined wrd “repurpsed” in paragraph 3 refer t?
      A. Recycled int raw materials.B. Adapted fr a new functin.
      C. Resld at a lwer price.D. Upgraded t advanced versins.
10 What can the new devices be used fr accrding t the text?
      A. Assisting divers t recrd vides.B. Mnitring air pllutin in cities.
      C. Arranging bus schedules in cities.D. Cunting marine species underwater.
      11. What can be the best title fr the text?

Wuld yu fllw a rule if breaking it brught persnal gain and n ne wuld knw? A series f experiments with ver 14,000 participants suggest that 1 in 4 peple bey rules even withut scial pressure, punishment r rewards. The results challenge traditinal ecnmic theries, which assume external mtives drive rule-fllwing, and can reshape hw we design new laws.
Simn Gaechter frm the University f Nttingham ntes that while rule-fllwing is an essential part f human scial behavir, researchers debate its causes. Ecnmists emphasize external factrs, while thers stress the imprtance f cnfrmity (从众).
Mtivated t create sme unity, Gaechter and his clleagues created a variety f simple cmputer tasks, in which mre than 14,000 peple were tld t mve a circle t a red traffic light, wait until it turned green, and then reach a finish line as quickly as pssible t maximize their reward.
The participants started with $20, but the reward fell by $1 per secnd, s breaking the rules by nt waiting fr the green light wuld mean mre mney. Yet despite being tld their actins were annymus and n ne wuld be watching what they did, arund 70 percent f peple still fllwed the rule. Even when the researchers pinted ut the ptential gain frm breaking the rule, the majrity f peple still fllwed it.
The study als explred the influence f scial expectatins. Participants wh thught thers wuld bey the rule were mre likely t fllw it themselves. Hwever, scial expectatins didn’t affect everyne: abut 25% f peple fllwed the rule regardless f thers’ behavir, shwing an internal respect fr rules.
Adding external penalties, such as the risk f being caught, increased cmpliance (遵守) t 78%. The results indicate that while external rewards play a rle, scial expectatins and internatinalized cmmitment t rules als significantly cntribute t cmpliance.
Gaechter argues that ecnmists’ fcus n mtives verlks peple’s willingness t fllw rules simply because they shuld be fllwed. He thinks that the findings have implicatins fr plicymakers, as even unenfrced rules can shape behaviur by expressing scial nrms and expectatins.
      12. What d traditinal ecnmic theries believe abut rule-fllwing?
      A. It. is mstly mtivated by external rewards.
      B. It is mainly driven by peple’s internal beliefs.
      C. It is fully determined by persnal willingness.
      D. It is significantly influenced by cnfrmity.
      13. Hw did the researchers cnduct the experiments?
      A. By frcing participants t fllw r break traffic rules.
      B. By bserving participants’ real-life rule-fllwing behavirs.
      C. By cmparing behavirs f participants frm different cultures.
      D. By creating virtual tasks with different cnditins fr participants.
      14. Hw d scial expectatins influence rule-fllwing?
      A. Minrity peple fllw rules nly when thers d the same.
      B. Mst peple fllw rules mre if they think thers will t.
      C. Observing ther peple get punished reduces cmpliance.
      D. The mre scial expectatins, the better rule-fllwing.
      15. What implicatin d the findings have fr plicymakers?
      A. Laws shuld rely mainly n external penalties.
      B. Ecnmic mtives are key t prmting cmpliance.
      C. Law-making shuld cnsider internalized rule respect.
      D. Unenfrced rules have n practical impact n behavirs.
