Besides the strage, they declared, Gmail wuld be equipped with Ggle’s search technlgy s users culd quickly find an ld email, pht r ther persnal infrmatin stred n the service. It wuld als autmatically string tgether all f the cmmunicatins abut the same tpic s they culd be read as if it was a single cnversatin.
It was such a surprising cncept that shrtly after The Assciated Press published a stry abut Gmail late n the afternn f April Fl’s Day in 2004, readers began calling and emailing t infrm the news agency that it had been fled by the Ggle funders.
But The AP knew Ggle wasn’t jking abut Gmail because an AP reprter had been invited t the cmpany t see what they were wrking n. In his ffice, Page, then just 31 years ld, shwed the reprter hw nicely Gmail perated. “I think peple are really ging t like this,” Page predicted.
As with s many ther things, Page was right. Gmail nw has mre than 1.8 billin active accunts and has becme the first building blck in Ggle’s internet empire beynd its search engine. On the tp flr f a wrkshp in Athens, Greece, a team f artists are busy creating faithful cpies f the famus statue f Alexander the Great and the Venus de Mil.
“Our wrk mstly ends up at gift shps arund the wrld. Museums als ask us t make cpies f artwrks. Prices start at $24 fr a small Venus statue and g as high as $11,560 fr a faithful cpy f it.” says Maria Zafeiri, an artist at the wrkshp fr 30 years. “It’s exciting when ur statues end up in a museum and thusands f eyes admire them. They bring even mre visitrs t Greece.”
Making cpies f ancient Greek statues isn’t new. Researchers and artists began reprducing ancient Greek sculptures shrtly after the Natinal Archaelgical Museum in Athens pened in 1829.
“The first cpies were nt fr cmmercial reasns, but fr scientific nes. Schlars wanted t study the ancients.” says Maria Zafeiri. “Later, everyne wanted statues in their huse, abve the fireplace. They were in all Eurpean living rms.”
Sme cpies f ancient statues were terrible, but ther reprductins were s faithful that they ended up in places like the Getty Museum in Ls Angeles. In 2018, the museum determined its famus Kurs statue—suppsed t date frm 650 t 480 BC and bught fr $6 millin—was prbably a frgery (赝品), and remved it frm view. “There are methds t fl the experts.” Maria Zafeiri says. “Such frgeries create a false image f Greek culture and mislead researchers.”
But aren’t Maria Zafeiri and her wrkshp als prducing frgeries? “I think the difference between a frgery and a reprductin is the intentin. There are reprductins f designer bags, but that becmes frgeries when the reprducer says they’re real.” says Maria Zafeiri. “Our shp just feeds the desire f travelers t wn smething lvely t pack up r ship hme. A gd reprductin can extend yur trip. It’s similar t a phtgraph f yurself while n vacatin, it brings yu back t that beautiful day at the Acrplis.”

C.It was prbably frm a skilled artist.D.It was created between 650 and 480 BC.
11.What sets a frgery apart frm a reprductin accrding t Maria Zafeiri?
A.The price.B.The material.C.The quality.D.The purpse.
Having studied mre than 400 grups f hneybees in Brazil fr tw years, a grup f bilgists led by Viviana Di Pietr reprt that, like humans, hneybees are capable f learning new traditins which are then handed dwn ver generatins.
“The mst bvius example is that hneybees can build their hmes accrding t different architectural traditins which are then handed dwn ver generatins,” they write. “We fund that arund 95% f the hneybees built their hmes in a hrizntal (与地面平行的) style, while 5% f them preferred a spiral (螺旋形的) structure. In each case, the traditin was passed dwn t the next generatins.”
Since hneybees shwed a strng preference fr a hrizntal structure, it was surprising that spiral structures ccurred at all. “With the help f vide cameras, we fund that there was a nticeable difference in average building rate between the tw styles.” the researchers add.
In rder t rule ut a genetic (遗传的) explanatin fr the different styles, the researchers tk hneybees frm the grups that built in spiral traditin clse t the grups that built in hrizntal traditin. The imprted hneybees sn learned t build their hmes in the lcal style, which was then passed dwn t their children as they eventually grew up. “It is very likely that the imprted hneybees might have changed the style as a way f crrecting the cnstructin errrs made by their ancestrs.” the researchers suggest.
The findings have surprised bservers f animal culture, as they suggest that hneybees can learn and hand dwn different building traditins ver generatins. This has changed the way f thinking abut culture, which is ften strictly defined as behaviur directly handed dwn frm human parents t their children until it becmes a traditin in a grup.
“Insect culture was thught impssible. Less than a century ag, culture was thught t be uniquely human,” says bilgist Andrew Whiten f the University f St Andrews, wh was nt invlved in the research. “But the new research has ffered strng evidence pinting t the ppsite.”
12.Why d mst hneybees prefer a hrizntal structure accrding t the research?
A.It is easier t be cpied.B.It is a bit strnger.
C.It is mre cmfrtable.D.It is faster t build.
13.What des the underlined wrd “they” in paragraph 5refer t?
A.Scientists.B.Traditins.C.Findings.D.Parents.
14.Which wrd best describes Andrew Whiten’s attitude t the new research?
A.Favrable.B.Disapprving.C.Dubtful.D.Unclear.
15.What is the best title fr the text?
A.Researchers Have Different Views n Animal Culture
B.Hneybees May Learn and Preserve Cultural Traditins
C.Hneybees Can Learn Building Skills Frm Their Neighbrs
D.Researchers Have Misunderstd Hneybees fr a Lng Time
