My average screen time was eight hurs and 44 minutes per day—mre time than I spent sleeping. This made me fit int the categry f being “cnstantly nline”, defined as smene whse entire life depends n the Internet. S I decided t change my lifestyle and use a dumbphne, designed with minimal features, primarily fr basic cmmunicatin such as calls, text messages and limited r n Internet access.
The first tw days f my experiment started n a weekend. I experienced deep anxiety: I thught I was missing ut n an event. As a result, I started calling my friends and family just t make sure that I wasn’t.
I asked Lindsay Bira, a clinical health psychlgist, why my decisin t dwngrade initially made me mre anxius. “Being alne r discnnected frm what’s ging n can be read by the deep brain as a survival threat when it really isn’t a threat,” Bira said. “It is imprtant t learn hw t tlerate the feeling f being discnnected r left ut until ur brain understands that it is nt a prblem, which allws us t self-cntrl withut reaching fr the phne, and we develp a deeper, healthier cnnectin t urselves.”
I started calling friends t hang ut, rediscvering the lst art f phne cnversatins. It reduces miscmmunicatin cmpared t texting and makes me a better listener, helping me feel mre cnnected.
After the week, I brke the habit f autmatically checking my phne fr infrmatin. Instead f ging thrugh scial media at wrk, I started getting news frm ther surces.

An Anna’s Hummingbird (蜂鸟) was seen in the frest in Califrnia recently. As it mved its head, its feathers changed clurs in the sunlight. The Anna’s Hummingbird is a small hummingbird fund alng the west cast f Nrth America. The male Anna’s Hummingbird has clurful feathers n its head and thrat, which can appear red, pink, range, r green. This has led t the assumptin that the bird can actively change the clur f its feathers, but it is actually nt the case.
The clur shifts we see are caused by the structure f the feathers, nt by changes t the actual cluring f the feathers. The tiny structures n the surface f the feathers interact with light waves t prduce certain clurs. Anna’s Hummingbird feathers have tiny structures called melansmes (黑色素体) that lk like stacked flat discs (圆片). These disc堆积 are super thin, clse t the size f the light waves we can see. When sunlight hits these discs, the light waves bunce and interact with each ther. Sme clurs get brighter, while thers cancel ut, creating shining rainbw effects— similar t hw sap bubbles. This “light dance” is why hummingbird feathers lk s clurful!
Unlike Anna’s Hummingbirds, sme birds change the clur f their feathers in a different way. Fr example, the Western Tanager has yellw feathers n its head and bdy. During mlting (蜕毛), it can absrb the yellw clur t reveal an range- red clur underneath. Thus, while Anna’s Hummingbirds rely purely n the structures f feathers, ther birds actively cntrl the clur spread and feather mvement t generate changeable feathers.
The special feather structures in Anna’s Hummingbirds allw us t witness the diversity and wnder f the wrld. Next time yu bserve an Anna’s Hummingbird in the sun, watch clsely as its thrat seems t flash in rainbw clurs. But remember— this magic is happening in the structures thrugh physics, nt bilgy.
28. What can we learn abut Anna’s Hummingbirds accrding t the passage?
A. Their migratin happens alng the cast f America.
B. They mve their ways twards the psitin f the sun.
C. Their wings are cvered with clurful feathers.
D. They are unable t cntrl the clur changes.
29. What causes the clur changes f Anna’s Hummingbirds?
A. The high brightness f their feathers. B. The actual cluring f their feathers.
C. The surface structure f their feathers. D. The seasnal changes f their feathers.
30. What can be inferred frm paragraph 3 abut the Western Tanager?
A. It absrbs varius light waves. B. It actively changes the clur f the feathers.
C. It mainly generates the yellw clur feathers. D. It depends n its head t change clurs.
31. What is the purpse f the last paragraph?
A. T advcate fr the cnservatin f Anna’s Hummingbirds.
B. T explain the bilgical prcess f feather clur changes.
C. T highlight the diversity and wnder f physics in nature.
D. T cmpare clur-changing ways amng different birds.

Accrding t the American Time Use Survey, an average grcery trip takes mre than 40 minutes. That may nt sund like much, but the task can be time-cnsuming n busy days, largely due t many decisins.
A study fund that the average American cnsumer makes abut 227 chices regarding fd every day. Barry Schwartz, the psychlgist and authr f The Paradx f Chice, cnnects cnsumer hesitatin t an increase in dissatisfactin. Even after making a chice, yu can dubt whether yu made the right ne. It seems what we culd really use at the grcery stre is nt mre chices, but fewer.
Frtunately, there exists a part f the retail sectr(零售)I think f as the “single-ptin stre” r SOS. The fferings there are deliberately reduced, typically leaving nly a handful f each item t chse frm. Perhaps the best example is Aldi(奥乐齐). It sells the basic grcery items, while largely aviding name brands. Instead, it prvides its wn line f items. The time I save frm chsing amng the pared-dwn chices means I ften get my shpping dne much faster thrugh the stre. Efficiency is what we are after.
While the SOS mdel reduces certain frustratins, it has sme limitatins. Any Aldi’s shpper will knw the annyance f searching in vain fr sme specialty item needed t cmplete a recipe, like a particular sauce. A persn may als nt like an SOS brand’s particular item. Smetimes the brands I like aren’t sld at Aldi, and the stre’s ptin just desn’t measure up.
Still, the SOS is effective at what it des: prviding limited, mid-tier-quality fd ptins, and maybe reducing my hundreds f daily decisins. I’ll gladly take that trade-ff fr the time it saves me, as well as the mental space it clears. Nw, I can head t my lcal SOS and enjy the freedm f nt having t make any chice at all.
32. What effect d t many chices have n cnsumers accrding t Schwartz?
A. They encurage cnsumers t buy mre.
B. They increase cnsumers’ cnfidence in their chices.
C. They cause cnsumers t feel frustrated and dissatisfied.
D. They give cnsumers a greater sense f freedm in their ptins.
33. What des the underlined wrd “pared-dwn” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Simplified. B. Expanded. C. Cmplicated. D. Tailred.
34. What can we knw abut the SOS mdel?
A. The quality f fd there is very lw.
B. It prvides nly ne brand fr each prduct categry.
C. Shppers have t spend mre time chsing prducts.
D. Specialty items needed fr certain recipes may nt be available.
35. What is the authr’s attitude tward the SOS mdel?
A. Supprtive. B. Cautius. C. Indifferent. D. Dubtful.

Withut feedback, we are cut ff. We behave in a way that we think is right while remaining ignrant. There is psitive feedback and negative feedback. Negative feedback can be hard t handle. When it is prly delivered, it is unhelpful. 36 Belw are sme useful tips t help us give negative feedback.
Deliver feedback carefully and respectfully. If given t frequently and withut regard t feeling, the persn n the ther end will g back t defense mde—pssibly lsing cnfidence, self-esteem, and mtivatin. 37
Avid wrapping negative feedback in praise. The feedback sandwich—“praise, criticism, praise”, while ppular, may nt always be apprpriate. The standard can give a false view f hw smene is perfrming. 38 Therefre, this standard might suggest that the perfrmance was successful.
39 Either psitive r negative feedback can be cnstructive, as lng as it encurages grwth. On the ther hand, critical feedback serves little purpse ther than t tell smene they are nt gd. We must, therefre, begin by cnsidering the gal f feedback: imprvement. The receiver shuld be clear abut what has gne well and what needs t be prgressed.
Negative feedback must be handled carefully. 40 If encuraged t play t their strengths, the persn receiving the feedback may pssibly find a mre effective way f reslving difficulties.
A. Pay attentin t feedback’s true gal.
B. Learn t view psitive feedback prperly.
C. Tw psitive cmments utweigh ne negative cmment.
