Jean, an editr f the ELLE magazine, lived a fast pace life in the wrld f fashin. Then ne day, he had a severe disease that left him an extremely rare cnditin. Jean's mind was fully functining and aware while the blinking (眨) f his left eye was his nly means f cmmunicatin.
Imagine fr just a mment what it wuld be like t lie perfectly still, and the nly thing yu can mve is yur left eye. As an experiment— try t read the rest f this article using nly yur left eye.
Jean's therapist(治疗专家) designed a means fr him t cmmunicate by rganizing all the letters by their frequency and reading each letter. Jean wuld blink nce when the crrect letter was read that matched the letter in the wrd he was thinking. He wuld painstakingly spell each wrd in the sentence he was thinking. Using this methd he was able t pen his memir(自传). He tells hw he wuld mentally write, edit and rewrite his sentences befre cmmunicating them t his therapist.
“ My diving bell becmes less unbearable, and my mind takes flight like a butterfly. There is s much t d. Yu can wander ff in space r in time.” Jean- Dminique writes in The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.
Near the end f his bk, Jean is reduced t examining the cntents f the half- pened purse f his assistant. Tissues, flded franc ntes, subway tickets, keys,“ keys” he thinks:

Belnging is imprtant in mst cultures. It can give yu a sense f purpse. Wrking alngside peple wh might be serving an imprtant cause, r being n a champinship team, r wrking tgether with peple wh share similar gals, values, r interests makes a persn feel imprtant and useful.
Smetimes, thugh, the belnging aspect can translate t a sense f“ us versus them”. It can create a situatin where yu view smene wh is nt f yur team r grup as the enemy and the persn t be feared. While this ften happens in plitical cntexts, it can als ccur in daily life. Yu might hear the way smene talks, r lk at their dress, r learn where they went t schl, and depending n yur alignment t a certain grup yu might cnsider them wrthy f yur attentin, r ignre them because they dn't belng where yu belng.
The prblem with belnging is that smetimes yu begin t gain such a sense f purpse frm it, that yur grup is what matters mst. In sme cases, yu may even find ways t separate frm thers nt in yur grup. The fact is that fundamentally we all belng t the human race. We all have the same make- up and design underneath, with different packaging arund us.
When yu use belnging t create separatin, yu are missing ut n gifts that thers might be able t share. It's ne f the mst hurtful and judgmental things yu can d t smene else: dismissing them ut f hand simply because they dn't share the views f yur grup.
Becme aware f yur desire t belng, and try t be bjective abut yur need fr it. Belnging can be a pwerful experience, and it can als serve t separate yu. Yu might want t be separated frm the peple in“ that grup,” but yu end up cutting yurself ff frm ptential gifts and supprt that may be meaningful t yu. Having beliefs and supprting nble causes is certainly imprtant, and simply being part f a grup isn't fundamentally a bad thing; just becme watchful abut whether it translates int. a refusal t accept smene wh belngs elsewhere.
28. What des belnging give a persn accrding t paragraph 1?
A. A sense f value. B. A chance t win.
C. The pwer f culture. D. The way t fame.
29. Which has the similar meaning t the underlined wrd“ alignment”?
A. Restrictin. B. Assciatin.
C. Reslutin. D. Cntributin.
30. What is explained in paragraph 3?
A. The significance f grups.
B. The underlying unity f peple.
C. The characteristics f belnging.
D. The attractin f the external wrld.
31. What advice des the authr give abut belnging?
A. Having a strng desire fr it.
B. Satisfying yur need frm it.
C. Abandning it fr its likely dangers.
D. Balancing it with penness t thers.

Illeism, put simply, is the practice f talking abut neself in the third persn rather than the first persn. This rhetrical device is ften used by pliticians t lend their wrds an air f bjectivity. In his accunt f the Gallic War, fr example, the emperr Julius Caesar wrte“ Caesar avenged (报复) the public” rather than “I avenged the public”. This small verbal shift seems intended t make the statement feel a little mre like histrical fact, recrded by an bjective bserver.
T the mdern ear, illeism can sund a little silly r self- imprtant - and we may even ridicule famus peple wh chse t talk in this way. Yet recent psychlgical research suggests that illeism can bring sme real mental benefits. If we are trying t make a difficult decisin, speaking abut urselves in the third persn can help t calm the emtins that culd lead ur thinking ff curse, allwing us t find a wiser slutin t ur prblem.
This apprach crrespnds t the scientific study f wisdm by Igr Grssmann at the University f Waterl in Canada. The study revealed that the wisdm f peple's reasning can depend n the cntext. In particular, he fund that their wise reasning scres tended t be much higher when cnsidering ther peple's situatins than their wn persnal dilemmas. Grssmann called this“ Slmn's Paradx” after the ancient Biblical king, wh was famus fr advising thers wisely, while making a series f disastrus persnal decisins that ultimately left his kingdm in chas.
By switching t the third persn, ur descriptins f the situatin will start t sund as if we are talking abut smene else rather than urselves. This sense f detachment (抽离) wuld allw us t see the bigger picture, rather than getting caught up in ur wn feelings.
32. Why is Julius Caesar mentined?
A. T present a fact. B. T serve as a prf.
C. T intrduce a war. D. T recmmend a device.
33. What key pint is cnveyed in paragraph 2?
A. Illeism supprts clearer reasning. B. Mdern peple dislike illeism.
C. The famus are careful abut illeism. D. Illeism enhances multiple emtins.
34. What can we learn frm Grssmann's study?
A. Dilemmas stimulate reasning. B. Wisdm begins in wnder.
C. Bystanders are clear- sighted. D. Every man has his wn truble.
35. What is the best title f the text?
A. A Prven Device fr Great Leaders
B. The Ancient Trick fr Wiser Thinking
C. An Effective Way frm a New Perspective
D. The Age- Old Practice in Mdern Experiment
