At the start f my first lessn in Chinese calligraphy, my teacher tld me t write my name. After I put it dwn, he said, plainly: "Nw I will teach yu hw t make it beautiful." I felt my breath catch.
Grwing up in Singapre, I had an uneasy relatinship with my Chinese name. My parents are ethnically Chinese but they didn't speak Mandarin. Unfamiliar with Chinese characters, they used frtune tellers t decide my name based n the ideal number f strkes(笔画)fr each character, which was calculated fr the best frtune. Chinese names can be truly petic. Nt mine. Embarrassingly, the characters fr my Chinese name mean, rughly, "ld," "barley" and "warm." My persnal and cultural histries were messy knts.
When I arrived in America fr cllege at 18, I embraced critical analysis and creative expressin. It felt like a way t abandn the strict frmalities that defined my early years in Singapre's high-pressure educatin system, and with it, perhaps, parts f my identity. Suddenly, I felt the need t present myself in a way that Americans wuld accept. I put n an American accent and set aside my Chinese name. Ultimately, after 14 years in the States, I decided t learn calligraphy. Why nt get back in tuch with my heritage? I thught.
In calligraphy, the idea is t replicate(复制)the ld masters' techniques, thus enhancing yur wn. Every week, my teacher wuld evaluate my writing. "Yu need t be braver," he nce bserved. "Yur challenge is in prducing a bld strke.” Fr years, 1 had prided myself n develping an image f integratin and cnfidence despite deep insecurities, but my writing betrayed me.
I had been learning calligraphy t try t get in tuch with my cultural rts, but what I was really seeking was a return t myself. That first lessn came with the terrific prmise that what had been shameful in myself culd be made beautiful—and that I culd be the ne t d that wrk. I knw nw that what calligraphy teaches me is nt the value f replicatin but the pssibility that I culd knw myself mre fully.
24. What criterin guided the selectin f the tr's Chinese name?
A. Petic sund patterns B. Ideal symblic images.
C. Favrable strke cunts. D. Psitive literal meanings.
25. Why did the authr adpt an American accent?
A T break with traditin. B. T fit int the cmmunity.
C. T achieve academic success. D. T facilitate language learning.
26. What have we learned abut the authr's experience with calligraphy?
A. It revealed her inner self. B. It imprved her public image.
C. It presented n challenge t her. D. It enhanced her replicatin skills.
27. What has the authr learned frm calligraphy?
A. Frtune favrs the bld. B. Embrace wh yu truly are.
C. Our rts define ur identity. D. Planning is gd, but ding is better.

New research shws that remving black rhins' hrns(犀牛角)t make them less attractive t illegal hunters is reducing their territry sizes and making them less sciable with each ther.
The study, published in the jurnal PNAS, fund that de-hrned Suth African rhins have hme ranges that are 45 per cent smaller than thse f cmplete animals, and that they were 37 percent less likely t engage in scial interactins.
"The big, dminant bulls that used t have very large territries that verlapped with a lt f females may nw have much less territry and much less reprductive(繁殖的)success," says Vanessa Duthe, wh led the wrk at Switzerland's University f Neuchatel.
"It's really hard t predict the effects f this," she says. "It desn't mean that ppulatin success will necessarily decline, because it might pen up gaps fr yunger males that wuld nt have had the space r the means befre." Indeed, a University f Bristl study published last year shwed that de-hrning des nt negatively affect ppulatins verall.
But such unintended behaviral cnsequences necessarily feed int judgments abut whether this highly invasive prcedure is wrthwhile. Remarkably, perhaps, there is little hard evidence either way. "N ne's put all the data tgether t say whether it's a really effective measure," says Duthé.
"What is clear is that the intrductin f de-hrning and a decline in illegal hunting has ccurred at the same time," she adds. “But de-hrning has been accmpanied by ther cnservatin measures that may be mre effective.”
“It's incredibly cmplicated.” says Lucy Chimes, a member f the Bristl team. "There are s many ther factrs invlved. Yu have t cnsider what ther security measures are being carried ut—fencing, patrls, staff numbers—and pverty levels surrunding parks, their nearness t natinal brders and whether there is cmmunity engagement." Chimes is currently planning a prject that aims t separate these and ther factrs. In the meantime, Duthé believes that de-hrning is a wrthwhile tl f last curse f actin. A rhin that is behaving a little bit strangely is better than a dead rhin.”
28. What is the purpse f remving the hrns f black rhins?
A. T make them less sciable. B. T prtect them frm being hunted.
C. T reduce their hme ranges. D. T affect their reprductive success.
29. What des the underlined phrase "invasive prcedure" in paragraph 5 refer t?
A. The remval f rhin hrns. B. The lss f rhin territries.
C. The impact n rhin ppulatin. D. The change f rhin behavir.
30. What is Chimes' attitude tward the de-hming f black rhins?
A. Supprtive. B. Oppsed. C. Uncncerned. D. Uncertain.
31. What can we learn frm the last paragraph?
A. De-hrning rhins shws satisfying effects.
B. Varius factrs lead t the decline in illegal hunting.
C. De-hming is the mst significant actin taken by researchers.
D. Rhins are suppsed t behave a little bit strangely.
D
Imagine this. Yu need an image f a balln fr a wrk presentatin and turn t an AI text-t-image generatr, like Midjurney r DALL-E, t create a suitable image, Yu enter the prmpt(指令)"red balln against a blue sky" but the generatr returns an image f an egg instead.
What's ging n? The generatr yu're using may have been "pisned". What des this mean? 'Text-t-image generatrs wrk by being trained n large datasets that include millins r billins f images. Sme f the generatrs have been trained by randmly scraping nline images, many f which may be under . This has led t many cpyright infringement(侵害)cases where artists have accused big tech cmpanies f stealing and prfiting frm their wrk.
This is als where the idea f "pisn" cmes in. Researchers wh want t empwer individual artists have recently created a tl named "Nightshade" t fight back against unauthrized image scraping. The tl wrks by slightly changing an image's pixels(像素)in a way that cnfuses the cmputer visin system but leaves the image unchanged t a human's eyes. If an rganizatin then scrapes ne f these images t train a future Al mdel, its data pl becmes "pisned". This can result in mistaken learning, which makes the generatr return unintended results. As in ur earlier example, a balln might becme an egg.
The higher the number f "pisned" images in the training data, the greater the impact. Because f hw generative Al wrks, the damage frm "pisned" images als affects related prmpt keywrds. Fr example, if a "pisned" image f a Picass wrk is used in training data, prmpt results fr masterpieces frm ther artists can als be affected.
Pssibly, tls like Nightshade can be abused by sme users t intentinally uplad "pisned" images in rder t cnfuse Al generatrs. But the Nightshade's develper hpes the tl will make big tech cmpanies mre respectful f . It des challenge a cmmn belief amng cmputer scientists that data fund nline can be used fr any purpse they see fit.
Human rights activists, fr example, have been cncerned fr sme time abut the indiscriminate use f machine visin in wider sciety. This cncern is particularly serius cncerning facial recgnitin. There is a clear cnnectin between facial recgnitin cases and data pisning, as bth relate t larger questins arund technlgical cntrl. It may be better t see data pisning as an innvative slutin t the denial f sme fundamental human rights.
32. What des the underlined/wrd "scraping" in paragraph 2 prbably mean?
A. prmting B. cllecting C. damaging D. plishing
33. Accrding t the passage, adding pisned data might_________.
A. increase the accuracy f returned infrmatin
B. cause users t frget the prmpt key wrds
C. affect the training f generative AI
D. make prfits frm great masterpieces
34. What can be inferred frm the last tw paragraphs?
A. Data pisning is smehw justified t direct attentin t human rights.
B. Cmputer scientists has learned t respect the f mst artists.
C. Nightshade is being abused by human rights activists t recgnize faces.
D. The issue f technlgical gvernance has arused the lawyers' interest.
35. Which f the fllwing might be the best title f the passage?
A. Data Pisning: Gvernment Empwering Citizens t Prtect Themselves
B. Data Pisning: Addressing Facial Recgnitin Issues Amng Artists
C. Data Pisning: Risks and Rewards f Generative Al Data Training
D. Data Pisning: Restricting Innvatin r Empwering Artists
