Esther Kimani, a 29-year-ld pineer in agritech, is changing the lives f smallhlder farmers acrss Africa. As the funder f Farmer Lifeline Technlgies (FLT), she has applied artificial intelligence (AI) t fight against crp pests (害虫) and diseases, significantly reducing lsses fr rural farmers.
Kimani's jurney began in a small Kenyan village n the Aberdare Muntains. Witnessing firsthand the severe impact f pests and diseases n their crps — and cnsequently, their incme — she understd early hw agricultural lsses culd mean unmet basic needs like schl fees and healthcare. Despite these challenges, Kimani became the first girl frm her village t attend university, studying cmputer science. It was there that she recgnized the ptential f technlgy t slve rural farmers' struggles, and that's hw FLT was brn.
In Kenya alne,7.5 millin smallhlder farmers lse up t 50% f their yield (产量) t pests and diseases annually — lsses that culd feed millins. Traditinal slutins like hiring agricultural cnsultants r using drnes (无人机) are prhibitively expensive. T slve this critical issue, she develped an AI-pwered camera, which is set up n farms at n upfrnt cst. It scans crps cntinuusly and warns farmers thrugh Shrt Message Service (SMS) fr $3 per mnth when pests r diseases are detected.
A key fcus fr Kimani is supprting wmen farmers, wh make up 43% f the agricultural labr frce in develping natins, but wh ften lack access t technlgy. "Men in rural cmmunities tend t have smartphnes, while wmen rely n basic feature phnes," she ntes. "Thrugh SMS, we ensure wmen aren't left behind."
Kimani's innvatin has already impacted thusands f farmers, 78% f whm have reprted a yield increase f ver 36%. Her team aims t reach 200 thusand farms acrss the cuntry within five years. Fr Kimani, success in 2030 means seeing 200 thusand smallhlder farmers living with dignity — affrding educatin, healthcare, and financial stability thrugh imprved yields. Kimani is nt just building a cmpany; she's reshaping the future f African agriculture.
4. Why did Kimani fund FLT?
A. T fund rural farmers.B. T transfrm farming.
C. T expand AI industry.D. T research crp types.
5. Hw des the AI-pwered camera help farmers?
A. By sending them timely warnings.B. By cnnecting them t cnsultants.
C. By cntrlling drnes t scan crps.D. By driving pests away autmatically.
6. What is an advantage f Kimani's innvatin?
A. Equal access.B. Tailred service.
C. Large strage.D. Easy maintenance.
7. What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
A. Financial plicies affect agriculture.B. African agriculture will take the lead.
C. Kimani will pursue further educatin.D. Kimani's innvatin pwers a bright future.

Scientists have revealed much f the basics abut earthquakes: tectnic plates (构造板块) mve, causing strain energy (应变能) t build up, and that energy eventually releases in the frm f an earthquake. Hwever, frecasting earthquakes remains a significant challenge, which was evidenced by the 2011 great Thku earthquake. In additin t causing a tsunami that led t the Fukushima nuclear disaster, it resulted in mre than 18,000 deaths.
In recent years, researchers have been trying t figure ut a pssible relatin between the sun and earthquakes. Based n a previus study that cnnected slar activity with earthquakes, a study cnducted by researchers frm the University f Tsukuba (UT) cast light n this pssibility, cnfirming that sunspt numbers had sme influence n earthquakes and Earth’s climate, as affected by slar heat, played a rle.
“Slar heat drives atmspheric temperature changes, which in turn can affect things like rck prperties and undergrund water mvement,” said Junqueira Saldanha, leader f the research team. “Such changes can make rcks tend t break apart. Fr example, the changes in rainfall and snwmelt can affect the pressure n tectnic plate bundaries. While these factrs may nt be the main drivers f earthquakes, they culd still be playing a rle that can help t predict earthquakes.”
Amng ther findings, the researchers used mathematical and cmputatinal methds t analyze earthquake data alngside slar activity recrds and surface temperatures n Earth. They bserved that when they included Earth surface temperatures int their mdel, the frecasting became mre accurate, especially fr shallw earthquakes. “That makes sense, since heat and water mstly affect the upper layers f the Earth’s crust (地壳),” said Saldanha.
The findings suggest the transfer f slar heat t the surface f the Earth des affect earthquakes, hwever minutely, and that incrprating slar activity predictins int detailed Earth temperature mdels may help issue earthquake frecasts. “It’s an exciting directin, and we hpe ur study can decipher the bigger picture f what causes earthquakes,” said Saldanha.
8. Why did the authr mentin Thku earthquake in Paragraph 1?
A. T demnstrate the mvement f tectnic plates.
B. T illustrate the difficulty in earthquake frecast.
C. T reveal the heavy lsses caused by earthquakes.
D. T stress the necessity f weakening strain energy.
9. What des the study by UT mainly fcus n?
A. The climate change caused by earthquakes.
B. The impact f slar activity n atmsphere.
C. The reasns fr increased sunspt numbers.
D. The link between sunspts and earthquakes.
10. Which f the fllwing wuld Saldanha agree?
A. Slar heat decides earthquake frequency.
B. Tectnic plate pressure grws cnstantly.
C. Earthquakes ccur in the crust’s upper layer.
D. Slar activity data helps predict earthquakes.
11. What des the underlined wrd “decipher” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Reveal.B. Distinguish.C. Expand.D. Assess.

Suppse yu’re preparing fr a tennis match. Yur mind wanders, envisining every pssible utcme. D yu picture yurself in cntrl? Or des yur imaginatin ty with the idea f failure? Yur imaginatin shapes hw yu interpret the wrld arund yu and is capable f causing the same physilgical (生理的) and emtinal respnses that are caused by external, real-life events. T take just ne example, just as emtinal pictures and sunds can cause the pupils t widen, s can emtinal mental images in the mind.
Anther phenmenn highlighting the significance f the imaginatin is called functinal equivalence, which refers t the way the brain desn’t always distinguish between imagining an actin and physically ding it. Fr instance, when athletes vividly imagine running a race r sinking a basket, their brain scans reveal that the same neural circuits (神经回路) are activated as if they were physically perfrming the task. Other research with athletes using functinal MRI (磁共振成像) has shwn that mental practice engages regins f the brain invlved in cntrlling the bdy and als activates areas linked t fcus, mtivatin and emtinal regulatin.
The principle f functinal equivalence extends beynd sprts. In ne study, pianists were asked t picture mving their fingers acrss the keys, hearing the tune, and seeing the sheet music. Astnishingly, the same mtr areas in their brains lit up as when they actually played.
Many studies like this have prved the cnnectin between mental imagery and realwrld perfrmance. Whether yu’re aiming t build cnfidence r prepare fr a challenge, using yur imaginatin with mre intentin culd make all the difference. The key is t switch yur mental channel t an image f capability, cntrl and empwerment.
12. Hw des the authr start the text?
A. By giving a definitin.B. By explaining an pinin.
C. By presenting a cntext.D. By sharing an experience.
13. In which aspect is mental imagery the same as actual ccurrences accrding t the text?
A. Requiring bdy mvements.B. Initiating visual stimulatins.
C. Affecting physical functins.D. Causing emtinal respnses.
14. In which case may functinal equivalence ccur?
A. A learner cnducts a discussin with a prfessr.
B. A dctr envisins the prcedure f an peratin.
C. A pianist vides finger mvements fr perfectin.
D. A speaker practices a deep breath befre a speech.
