“Living ut f a suitcase” means yu can fit yur life int just a few bags and yu dn’t wn r rent a
lng-term apartment. Essentially, yu’re a nmad (流浪者). When I was furteen years ld, my mm had the idea
f drpping everything t travel the wrld and create a clser cnnectin between family members. Althugh I
abslutely lved the idea, I culdn’t imagine leaving my friends, schl, and all my “stuff” behind t travel the
      wrld full-time with my family.
T my surprise, during the travel, we have learned the mst imprtant mments are when we live happy
mments with ur family and friends. As we travel, we barely carry anything with us except the essential things
      第 2页/共 10页
like clthes, a laptp, ntebks, and tiletries (洗漱用品). We each carry a backpack and all five f us share tw
suitcases fr clthes. After buying new suvenirs r new clthes, we give sme f ur ld utfits away t peple in
need and it makes us s happy t be able t give back wherever we can.
At the beginning, it was difficult fr us t get used t never having a clset (衣橱), cnstantly changing htel
rms, and never fully unpacking befre we were back n the rad. But ver time we have learned t appreciate the
value f having less — the freedm t live fr experiences and the jy f traveling “light” in mind, bdy, and
spirit. Many f the wnderful new friends we have made n ur jurney have pened ur eyes t hw lucky we are.
We have met families in many parts f the wrld wh live in small hmes with n running water, yet they always
have huge smiles and are willing t share with us.
We nw knw that experiences and memries are the mst valuable things in life and that they can nly be
acquired when we let g f ur need fr pssessins and fcus n what really matters in life — enjying ur lives
each day with the peple we lve.
      4. Why did the authr’s mm decide t travel the wrld?
      A. T build strnger family bnds. B. T escape their current life.
      C. T enrich their travel experiences. D. T ease the wrk pressure.
      5. What was the authr’s initial feeling abut the idea f traveling the wrld?
      A. Annyed and fearful. B. Cnfused but hpeful.
      C. Pleased and excited. D. Interested but dubtful.
      6. What did the family d with their ld clthes after acquiring new nes?
      A. They directly threw them away. B. They kept them as suvenirs.
      C. They dnated them t peple in need. D. They exchanged them with lcal residents.
      7. What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
      A. We shuld let g f every single pssessin.
      B. Material wealth and pssessins bring happiness.
      C. Material pssessins shuld nt be ur ultimate gal.
      D. The family used t place t much emphasis n wealth.
While we aim t avid any appearance f baseless theries, it is ntewrthy t bserve the lng-standing
practice f putting magnets (磁铁) in cws, a phenmenn that has been carefully unflding fr years. Why are
      farmers putting magnets in cws?
Knwn as cw magnets, the devices are placed inside cattle t deal with “hardware disease”. Hardware
      第 3页/共 10页
Disease ccurs after an animal eats a metallic bject that then makes a hle in the wall f the reticulum, the secnd
stmach rm in ruminant animals (反 刍 动 物 ). This issue arises frm the natural eating behavirs f these
ruminants, similar t a persn at an unlimited fd event — quickly and eagerly large bites withut sufficient
chewing. This fast-paced feeding apprach makes them tend t unintentinally cnsume metal pieces in their fd,
including brken farm machinery parts, nails and wires used in fencing, fr instance.
Metal bjects entering the reticulum may result in infectins, increased bdy temperatures, digestive prblems,
and unease fr the animals. T address hardware disease, the main strategy is t prevent metal frm entering the
cattle’s diet. Farmers have als adpted the methd f placing cw magnets int the stmach using either a stmach
tube r a balling gun. The cw magnet attracts such bjects and prevents them frm becming fixed in the animal’s
tissue. These magnets, nce psitined, remain within the animals thrughut their lifespan, nly being remved
after death when the cws pass away r are prcessed fr meat.
Mseley, a Veterinary Medicine prfessr, states in a hardware disease resurce, “The magnet gathers freign
metallic bjects, reducing the risk f making a hle in the reticulum.” Research shws a mild magnetic field affects
a cw’s small bld pathways, imprving circulatin and aiding recvery withut significant impact n the cw r
      milk quality.
      8. Why are magnets fed t cws?
      A. T change feeding habits. B. T prevent hardware disease.
      C. T imprve the milk quality. D. T enhance digestive system.
      9. What is the main cause f hardware disease in ruminant animals?
      A. Eating withut chewing. B. Taking magnets by mistake.
      C. Sufficient chewing hard fd. D. Swallwing metals accidentally.
      10. What is the authr’s purpse in writing the passage?
      A. T describe the histrical practice f putting magnets in cws.
      B. T deny the adptin f cw magnets t enhance cattle health.
      C. T discuss the influence f a mild magnetic field n milk quality.
      D. T explain the reasn fr using magnets t prevent hardware disease.
      11. What might be a lgical cntinuatin f the passage?
      A. Explring mre ptential benefits f cw magnets.

      D. Evaluating the lng-term effects f magnets n animals.
Sratbu Medaka, a children’s bk, tells the stry f tiny medaka fish riding n a bird t a distant pnd. It
has delighted children, but nw it’s revealed t be true.
Researchers have lng struggled t explain hw fish turn up in lakes far frm ther bdies f water, a mystery
even Charles Darwin nted in 1859, when he suggested that aquatic (水生的) hatchlings might stick t the feet f
birds, thugh his bright idea remained a thery.
In 2019, Ya Akifumi, a bilgy student then, wndered if Darwin might have been right and further
wndered if fish-hunting birds might transprt egg-bearing aquatic plants stuck t their feet. T test this, he set up
tw pnds ne metre apart, ne cntaining 36plants and the ther withut, bth equipped with camera traps. After
six mnths, sme plants had switched pnds, and ne camera captured a bird flying away with a plant n its ft.
Next, Ya aimed t see if fish eggs culd weather the jurney being carried ut f water. He attached tiny medaka
eggs t aquatic plants and remved them fr zer t 24hurs—at favrable hatching cnditins — befre
      returning them.
In a paper in Science f Nature, Mr. Ya reprts that the medaka eggs can successfully hatch after up t 18
hurs ut f the water. Eggs withut a plant leaf t attach t rarely survived a few hurs. The big drp in survival
was at 16.3 hurs, when half the eggs became lifeless.
Whether any egg culd survive that lng, given that a bird’s average flight-speed is arund 39kph, is dubtful,
says Mr Ya, since wind expsure during such a lng jurney wuld dry them ut.
Shrter jurneys, hwever, are certainly pssible. And since many ther medaka-like species are fund
thrughut Asia, the chances are high that hitchhiking (搭便车) explains hw they have ended up in lakes with
seemingly n cnnectin t ther water bdies. Yet again, it wuld seem, Darwin’s theries turn ut t be crrect.
      12. Why des the authr mentin Darwin’s idea?
      A. T intrduce an academic term. B. T prvide research backgrund.
      C. T questin a well-knwn thery. D. T explre new research methds.
      13. What evidence did Ya find t supprt his assumptin?
      A. Birds flying between pnds. B. Fish eggs surviving n plants.
      C. A plant grwing in bth pnds. D. A bird carrying a plant n its ft.
      14. What may increase medaka eggs’ survival?
      A. Birds’ flying rute. B. Wind expsure.
      C. Supprting leaves. D. Lnger jurneys.
      第 5页/共 10页
      15. What is the main idea f the text?
      A. Children’s bk inspires research. B. Origin f fish has been uncvered.
      C. Fish’s hitch riding has been prven. D. Eggs and plants have a clse relatin.

As class mnitr I was used t rganizing grup wrk, nt helping students alne. One cld Octber
afternn, Mrs. Jenkins asked me t stay after class. Her usual smile was gne. “Ethan Miller jined us last mnth,”
she said quietly. “His family is ging thrugh hard times. His parents wrk tw jbs day and night t make ends

I frze, hlding my bks tightly. The final exams were six weeks away, and my wn grades had stpped
imprving. Even after staying up late studying math, my test scres stayed the same. My parents’ wrried faces
came t mind. Helping Ethan meant lsing precius exam preparatin time, but I culdn’t say n. “I’ll try,” I said
weakly, thugh I felt uneasy — what if this hurt us bth?
Ethan was like a shadw in class. He sat at the back, head dwn, writing ntes but never speaking. At lunch,
he ate alne by the lckers. When I first greeted him, he nly ndded. After three failed tries t chat, I grew
impatient. “We’ll prepare fr final exams tgether after schl,” I said firmly, using my rle as mnitr. He stayed
      silent but didn’t refuse.
Our first study meeting was awkward. I pened my textbks at the library table while Ethan sat rigidly,
staring at his ld shes. I repeated histry facts and science ntes like a machine; he cpied them quietly. During
ur third sessin, I explained a chemistry prblem but made a mistake. Ethan pinted at my paper. “This number is

reviewed the chapter last night... didn’t want t waste yur time.” Fr the first time, I saw the tiredness in his eyes
      — just like mine frm late-night studying.
