The ants run 108 times the length f their wn bdies every secnd at a speed f just ver 3 kph. And they keep track f the psitin f the sun, s that they always knw the mst direct rute back t the nest, thus lwering their time spent in extreme heat. Their bdies prduce prteins that resist heat. Sme ther creatures prduce such prteins after they cme in cntact with extreme heat. But since the silver ants nly exit the nest fr a few minutes at a time — nt lng enugh fr the prtein t take effect — they prduce the prtein while still in the nest befre they g ut, r they wuld die befre the prtein culd take effect.
Researchers als discvered that the ants are cvered n their tps and sides with the uniquely triangular(三角的) shape f the silver hairs, which enable them t dissipate (消散) heat. The hairs help an ant’s bdy exchange its heat t a cler area, even under full sun cnditins. The mst imprtant determining factr f success r failure at wrk and in life is self-awareness, the ability t understand wh we are, hw thers see us, and hw we fit int the wrld.
Fr millins f years, the ancestrs f humans evlved painfully slwly. Hwever, abut 150,000 years ag there was an explsive develpment in the human brain where, amng ther things, we gained the ability t examine ur wn thughts, feelings and behavirs, as well as t see things frm anther’s pint f view. Nt nly did this transfrmatin create the fundatin fr art, spiritual practices and language, but it came with a survival advantage fr ur ancestrs, wh had t wrk tgether in rder t survive.
Thugh we may nt face the same day-t-day threats t ur existence, self-awareness is n less critical. There is strng scientific evidence that peple wh knw themselves and hw thers see them are happier. They are smarter, superir students. They raise mre mature children. They als tend t be mre creative, cnfident and less aggressive.
But fr mst peple it is easier t chse self-delusin(自我欺骗) rather than the cld hard truth. Our increasingly “me” fcused sciety makes it easier t fall int this trap. Recent generatins have grwn up in a wrld bsessed with self-esteem(自负), cnstantly being reminded f their special qualities. Nt nly are ur assessments ften flawed (有缺陷), but we are usually terrible judges f ur wn perfrmance and abilities — frm leadership skills t achievements at schl and wrk. What’s scary is that the least cmpetent peple are usually the mst cnfident in their abilities.
Hw can we avid this fate? We must wrk n tw specific types f insight. Internal self-awareness is an inward understanding f ur passins and aspiratins, strengths and weaknesses and s n. And external self-awareness, knwing hw thers see yu, means understanding yurself frm the utside in.
Fr thse lking t gain true insight, remember that ther peple ften see us mre bjectively than we see urselves and that self-examinatin can have hidden traps that make insight actually impssible.
32. The first three paragraphs mainly talk abut _________.
A. the significance f self-awareness in human survival and advancement
B. the sharp cntrast between self-awareness f tday and the past
C. the necessity f a shift in self-awareness t satisfy the needs tday
D. the intelligence gap between mdern men and their ancestrs
33. What’ s the prblem with “me” fcused sciety nwadays?
A. Peple’s perfrmance and abilities are verlked.
B. Cmpetent peple tend t be uncnfident f their leadership skills.
C. It’ s difficult t btain an bjective assessment f urselves.
D. Mdern peple fail t bring their special qualities int full play.
34. Which f the fllwing is an example f external self-awareness?
A. Yu listen t the cmments abut yu frm thers.
B. Yu are fully aware f yur strengths and weaknesses.
C. Yu reflect yur behavirs thrughly every day.
D. Yu carefully cmpare yur behavir with that f thers.
35. In the last paragraph, the authr suggests that we shuld _________.
A. develp true insight t judge peple mre bjectively
B. try t avid the trap set by thers
C. gain mre insight by means f self-examinatin
D. pay mre attentin t external self-awareness
