During the final term f my theater and perfrmance degree at the University f Leeds, I fund myself
standing utside Berkeley Curt Care Hme with three classmates and an underdevelped idea. We planned t hld
sme interactive wrkshps with the residents t try t inspire memry and scial engagement.
I remember being nervus, aware that we were wrking with peple wh were weak and helpless and that I
had n idea what I was ding. Sme residents were almst nnverbal, sme were clearly nt with it, sme were
happy t see us, and sme were nt.
I had decided t play music at the end f the sessin. We went with the sng My Way because the residents, all
rughly 80 years ld, wuld have been listening t the hit sng in their late 20s.
Once I pressed play, it was as if a spell had been cast. Nearly everyne in the rm std up and sang what
seemed like every wrd. I was s prfundly mved. Many f them were cmmunicating much better. It lked
      and felt like magic.
Off I went t drama schl, but I thught abut that experience almst daily. S when we were given the

pprtunity t write a script fr a theater festival, I created a lve stry abut music and dementia (痴呆), lasting 50
      years f a cuple’s life.
And nw, 10 years later, the shw I made is running again in Lndn thanks t the Music fr Dementia
      campaign.
When my grandma was diagnsed with dementia tward the end f her life, I didn’t struggle t cmmunicate
with her in the way that ther peple in their 20s might have dne. I felt mre able t tune int what she needed and
better equipped t see her underneath the disease.
I nw knw that music-based treatment reduce the need fr antipsychtic medicatin (抗精神病药物) in mre
than 60 percent f peple living with dementia. I dn’t knw what my My Way wuld be, but I certainly think we
shuld all strive t find ur sng and d ur best t stay cnnected t the peple we share it with.
      4. Hw did the authr feel when they initially started the interactive wrkshps at the care hme?
      A. Excited and cnfident. B. Wrried and cnfused.
      C. Curius and patient. D. Calm and relaxed.

“A mth (飞蛾) t a flame” is ften used t indicate an inescapable attractin, yet it is a strange example f
animal behaviur that cntinues t cnfuse peple tday. Scientists have raised a number f theries ver the years
t explain why. One hlds that insects flying at night are fllwing their nature t fly twards the brightest spt in
their field f visin, which they mistake fr the sky. Anther suggests that insects are trying t warm themselves
with the heat prduced by the light. The mst ppular thery, thugh, is that insects are cnfusing lights with the
mn r ther celestial bdies (天体) that they nrmally use t navigate.
      第 5页/共 12页
T find ut the real reasn, the team carried ut a first set f experiments in an insect flight area. The
researchers used eight high-speed infrared (红外线的) cameras equipped with mtin capture technlgies t track
30 insects frm three mth and tw dragnfly species. They als flew lab-raised insects frm six different insect
rders (生物分类的目) that were t small fr mtin-capture technlgy, including fruit flies and hneybees, t
make sure different insects all shwed similar respnses t light. Wrking with c-authr Pabl Allen f the
Cuncil n Internatinal Educatinal Exchange in Mnteverde, Csta Rica, the researchers put heavy cameras,
lights and tripds in tw field sites t gather behaviral data frm insects in the wild.
The team was able t cnfirm that insects were nt beelining t the light but rather circling it as they tilted (倾
斜) in an attempt t turn their backs twards it. This behavir, knwn as a “drsal light respnse”, nrmally helps
insects t remain n an unchanging path f flight that is prperly lined t the hrizn.
Artificial light that arrives frm a pint surce causes them t fly in unpredictable patterns as they try t turn
their backs t what they are mistaking fr the sky.
Nw research might have finally slved the mystery mentined first: artificial light cnfuses insects’ ability t
turn themselves t the hrizn, cnfusing their sense f what is up and dwn and causing them t fly in circles.
      8. Which thery abut “a mth t a flame” is accepted by mst peple?
      A. They fllw their nature t fly. B. They are blind t artificial light.
      C. They mistake artificial light fr celestial bdies. D. They are attracted by the warmth f artificial light.
      9. What’s the authr’s purpse in using the figures in Paragraph 2?
      A. T shw the study is all-inclusive. B. T intrduce the purpse f the study.
      C. T estimate the cst f the research D. T stress the challenge faced by the researchers.
      10. What benefit can insects get frm “drsal light respnse”?
      A. They can fly beynd the hrizn. B. They can fllw a steady flight path.
      C. They can turn their backs twards lights. D. They can circle the light surce upside dwn.
      11. What’s the main idea f the text?
      A. Experiments in an insect flight area are cnducted.
      B. Insects’ strange chase fr artificial light is accunted fr.
      C. Theries n insects’ chase fr artificial light vary.
      D. Insects’ drsal light respnse is analyzed.

Researchers have develped a rbtic sensr that cmbines artificial intelligence techniques t read Braille (盲
      第 6页/共 12页
文) at speeds rughly duble that f mst human readers. The research team frm the University f Cambridge,
used machine learning algrithms (算法) t teach a rbtic sensr t quickly slide ver lines f Braille text.
The rbtic sensr the researchers used has a camera in its “fingertip”, and reads by using a cmbinatin f
the infrmatin frm the camera and the sensrs. “This is a hard prblem fr rbticists as there’s a lt f image
prcessing that needs t be dne t remve mtin blur (模糊) which is time-and energy-cnsuming,” said Parth
Ptdar frm Cambridge’s Department f Engineering.
“There are existing rbtic Braille readers, but they nly read ne letter at a time, which is nt hw humans
read,” said Ptdar. “Existing rbtic Braille readers wrk in a relatively static way: they tuch ne letter pattern,
read it, pull up frm the surface, mve ver, lwer nt the next letter pattern, and s n. We want smething that’s
mre realistic and far mre efficient.”
The team develped machine learning algrithms s the rbtic reader wuld be able t “deblur” the images
befre the sensr attempted t recgnise the letters. They trained the algrithms n a set f sharp images f Braille
with fake blur applied. After the algrithms had learned t deblur the letters they used a cmputer visin mdel t
      detect and classify each character.
Once the algrithms were incrprated, the researchers tested their reader by sliding it quickly alng rws f
Braille characters. The rbtic Braille reader culd read 315 wrds per minute with 87%accuracy, which is twice as
fast and abut as accurate as a human Braille reader.
“Braille reading speed is a great way t measure the dynamic perfrmance f tactile (能触知的) sensing
systems, s ur findings culd be applicable beynd Braille, fr applicatins like detecting surface textures r
slippage in rbtic manipulatin,” said Ptdar.
In the future, the researchers are hping t scale the technlgy t the size f a humanid hand.
      12. What des the underlined wrd “static” in Paragraph 3 mean?
      A. Lazy. B. Fast. C. Clever. D. Still
      13. Why is the newly develped rbtic sensr faster at reading Braille?
      A. It slides quickly alng rws f Braille characters. B. It has a rbtic sensrs n the fingertip.
      C. It uses machine learning algrithms t deblur images. D. It relies nly n its camera in the image prcessing.
14 What did Ptdar want t express in Paragraph 6?
      A. The prmising future f their research results. B. The gd perfrmance f the rbt sensr.
      C. The factrs in making the tactile sensing systems. D. The way t ensure the accuracy f the technlgy.
      第 7页/共 12页
      15. Which can be the best title fr the text?
      A. Technlgy t be scaled t the size f a humanid hand.
      B. Rbts trained t read Braille at twice the speed f humans.
      C. A great way t measure the perfrmance f sensing systems.
      D. Machine learning algrithms expected t change Braille writing.
