When handball was intrduced t Sri Lankan schls in 2010, I wanted t bring it t my schl, St Anthny’s, in the remte village f Wasalaktte. This became a challenging task as the sprts teacher was unwilling t initiate anything ther than traditinal sprts, such as cricket and rugby.
Hwever, I decided t start this game. Handball is a fascinating (有吸引力的) game which cmbines speed, technical precisin, skill and teamwrk. The bys were immediately interested and 40 students aged between 13 and 19 signed up t play. And I had the supprt f their parents.
Heshan Pradeep, a St Anthny’s graduate wh was a member f the Air Frce handball team, vlunteered t cach the team. Althugh handball is an indr game, we trained utdrs as ur schl had limited facilities. “It will ruin their studies!” cmplained sme f the teachers. But I managed t get the game ging.
After three mnths f hard training, we were able t send an under-19s bys’ team t cmpete with 50 ther schls at the first three-day, all-island schl handball turnament held in Clmb — the cuntry’s mst ppulus city. Our bys played remarkably well and reached the final.
And that was when the real game started. Students, parents, teachers and ld bys frm Clmb schls jined frces against us, saying they wuldn’t allw the cup t be taken ut f Clmb. Sme Clmb students waved leaves and danced and sang their sngs t intimidate ur bys. Even the referees (裁判) favred the Clmb schls. Defeated, the bys fell t the grund, sad and disappinted.
A few weeks after the defeat, I turned t Vnh, Heshan’s cach. Vnh agreed t cach the team in his free time. The fllwing year, the bys claimed the victry they deserved.

I was 17 when Juli Crtázar’s wildly experimental 1963 masterpiece, Hpsctch, fell int my hands, and that bk almst drve me crazy. Crtázar cast cnventinal structure aside, willing the reader t jump between 155 shrt chapters. Only years later did I understand Crtázar. It was my first experience f the exciting unpredictability that lay ahead in my jurney with bks.
Tday’s bk talk ften presents reading smewhere between the whlesmeness f vegetables and the pleasures f a patisserie (法式糕点):bks are beneficial, gd fr yu, r they’re a treat, a pleasure. But that leaves ut the trickier, mre delicate pleasures f tackling difficult bks, the big challenges n ur bkshelves that questin yur deepest values r make yu uncmfrtable in the right way.
In a set f studies, tw prfessrs, Gay Ivey frm the University f Nrth Carlina and Peter Jhnstn frm the University f Albany, fund that reading difficult bks abut characters with cmplicated lives helped teenagers becme mre understanding, less judgmental, mre likely t seek multiple viewpints, mrally strnger, and happier.
One f my favrite writers, Sarah Chihaya, explres bks that are “Life Ruiners” — bks that “yu can’t ever recver frm, that yu never stp thinking abut”, bks that leave yu fundamentally changed. Reading bks that refuse t be easily digested, “the nes that bring up anxieties and fears yu never knew yu had”, helped Chihaya t feel, as she writes, nt “better”, but “simply different”. As with many life-lng readers, the bks that truly shaped me were nt always pleasurable — but they were irresistible.
Yu’re nt always ready fr every challenging read, f curse. Timing matters. The American nvelist Garth Greenwell said in a 2024 interview that at 20, he tried Frank Bidart’s pems and turned away; but just a few years later, “reading his pems wuld be ne f the key literary experiences f my life”. If a bk desn’t wrk fr yu, dn’t frce yurself t finish it; but leave the dr pen t the idea that, like certain friendships, it might kindle (点燃) years later.
8. What des the authr think f tday’s bk talk?
A. It breaks traditin.B. It is rather structured.
C. It truly lacks depth.D. It is alternative in style.
9. What did Ivey and Jhnstn’s studies shw?
A. Reasns fr readers’ preference.B. Qualities t be bservant readers.
C Ways t appreciate cmplex stries.D. Impacts f reading difficult bks.
10 What effect did reading “Life Ruiners” have n Chihaya?
A. Destructive.B. Prductive.C. Transfrmative.D. Restrictive.
11. What des Greenwell’s experience suggest abut reading great literature?
A. It requires a literary mindset.B. It needs patience and readiness.
C. It can be started with petry.D. It brings new ideas and creativity.
D
The researchers, frm the University f Cambridge, say their slar-pwered reactr culd be used t make fuel t pwer cars and planes. It culd als be used t generate fuel in remte r ff-grid (没有电网的) lcatins.
Unlike cnventinal technlgies, the reactr develped by the Cambridge researchers des nt require fssil-fuel-based pwer, r the transprt and strage f carbn dixide (CO2), but instead cnverts (转化) atmspheric CO2 int smething useful using sunlight. The results are reprted in the jurnal Nature Energy.
Carbn capture and strage (CCS) has been prpsed as a pssible slutin t the climate crisis.
Hwever, it is energy intensive and there are cncerns abut the lng-term safety f string pressurised CO2 deep undergrund. “What if, instead f pumping carbn dixide undergrund, we made smething useful frm it?” said first authr Dr. Sayalee Katar frm Cambridge’s Yusuf Hamied Department f Chemistry. “Carbn dixide is a harmful greenhuse gas, but it can als be turned int useful chemicals.”
The fcus f the research grup is the develpment f devices that cnvert waste, water and air int practical fuels and chemicals. These devices take their inspiratin frm phtsynthesis (光合作用): the prcess by which plants cnvert sunlight int fd. The devices dn’t use any utside pwer: n cables, n batteries — all they need is the pwer f the sun.
The team’s latest system takes carbn dixide directly frm the air and cnverts it int syngas, a key element in the prductin f many chemicals. At night, specialized devices take in carbn dixide. When the sun cmes ut, the sunlight heats up the cllected gas, starting a chemical reactin that cnverts the gas int slar syngas. A mirrr n the reactr cncentrates the sunlight, making the prcess mre efficient.
The researchers say the particularly prmising pprtunity is that the syngas can be cnverted int many f the prducts we rely n every day, withut cntributing t climate change. They are building a larger-sized versin f the reactr and hpe t begin tests in the spring.
12. What can be learned abut the reactr frm the first tw paragraphs?
A. It cnsumes slar energy.B. It perates well in remte lcatins.
C. It requires fewer technlgies.D. It stres slar energy fr transprtatin.
13. Why des the authr mentin Katar’s wrds?
A. T intrduce their alternative thinking.B. T shw the rigin f their inspiratin.
C. T recgnize the value f their device.D. T explain the reasns fr their success.
14. What des paragraph 5 mainly talk abut?
A. The efficiency f different devices.B. Functinal prcesses f the system.
C. The cperatin f the team members.D. Wrking surrundings f the system.
15. What are the researchers planning t d?
A. Prduce green energy.B. Launch a trial f the reactr.
C. Replace existing fuels.D. Create a large-sized mirrr.
