“Sme students in pr health learned abut me thrugh the cllege I wrked at in Canada, and they’ve stayed with
me since,” she added, smiling bradly.
When asked abut using Tai Chi fr self-defense, Hynd expressed a preference fr cnnecting with smene
appraching aggressively, even if it meant risking her life. She priritizes frming cnnectins ver fighting.
Accrding t Ca Guzhng, a great Tai Chi master, Hynd has absrbed the essence f Chinese culture thrugh Tai
Chi. “Hynd lves t listen carefully t thers, apprach them with understanding, and transfrm enemies int
friends,” Ca Guzhng explained. “She reflects the philsphy fund in the ancient Chinese text, I Ching, which
      discusses change in the wrld.”

Since ancient times, fd has been a base fr cultures wrldwide. It is imprtant fr ur survival, which is why
attentin n fd is a universal rule that cnnects us all. T feed ur hungry brains, ur ancestrs invented fire and
cking, which passed digestin t culture.
In fact, a culture’s fd vcabulary is a windw int its values and pririties. The cultural psychlgist Paul
Rzin has fund that when French and American research participants are asked what cmes t mind when
thinking f fried eggs, the French say “breakfast” while Americans say “chlesterl (胆固醇) ”. The French think
f the cking experience; Americans think f what is entering the bldstream.
Smetimes, slurping (出声地吃) ndles is seen as the preferred way t interact with the delicius dish. There
is a great scene in Juz Itami’s film, Tampp (1985) where a grup f wmen in a htel are being taught table
manners and tld t eat their Italian pasta ndles slwly and quietly. Anther diner sitting nearby happily is
slurping his ndles and the jy he gets frm audibly (声音地) and physically interacting with his fd is infectius.
Befre they knw it, even the teacher is als slurping her ndles.
Besides, specific dishes never represent an unchanging traditin. “My grandma’s Egg F Yung lks and
tastes cmpletely different frm what yu might find in a restaurant r in smebdy else’s hme. After asking
abut her versin, I realized that she learned hw t make it by picking up different cking styles as she traveled
frm Jiangxi, Maca, and Hng Kng,” said Shirley Ting, a Canadian researcher.
If we treat culture as a defined thing, then we can see fd as an imprtant part f culture — fd practices
and traditins help cmmunicate cultural values, reprduce thse values ver time and acrss generatins, and help
imprve a grup’s sense f having a distinct identity, different frm ther grups.
      8. What may we learn frm Paul Rzin’s research n fd?
      A. Fd vcabulary increases with cultural exchanges.
      B. Peple have the same fd-related health cncerns.
      C. Different cultures priritize different aspects f fd.
      D. Americans and the French have similar cking methds.
      9. Why des the authr mentin the scene in Tampp?
      A. T highlight different fd preferences.
      B. T stress the appeal f pleasurable dining.
      第 6页/共 13页
      C. T criticize rude manners in public places.
      D. T cmpare dining habits in films and daily life.
      10. Which functin f fd is referred t in the last paragraph?
      A. Passing dwn traditinal cking techniques.
      B. Encuraging cultural appreciatin glbally.
      C. Presenting cultural gaps and differences.
      D. Strengthening cultural values and uniqueness.
      11. What des the text mainly talk abut?
      A. Diet can impact health.
      B. Fd is a bridge t culture.
      C. Ndles can be a cultural symbl.
      D. Glbal views are different abut fd trends.

Sme f life’s simplest mysteries can prve the hardest t slve. One such mystery is hw a bird sleeps,
      especially while it’s n a branch.
The sleep cycle during ur deepest sleep lasts fr several minutes, but in birds, it lasts hardly 10 secnds; they
will keep ne part f their brain awake, which yu might ntice when a bird has ne eye pen. This will allw birds
t run away frm a hunt at a mment’s ntice, even when they’re in the middle f a sleep.
T fall asleep, a bird’s bdy ges thrugh a series f changes, ne f which is that the muscles lse their
hardness, which happens as a main result f reduced brain cntrl f muscle mvement. T stand perfectly
balanced n a branch while the muscles becme weak isn’t easy. Anyne wh has tried t sleep while standing n a
train wuld knw this. S when a bird lwers itself, its talns (爪子) autmatically and invluntarily bend and hld
n tightly t the branch, and until the leg is straightened, the talns will nt relax. The key behind this mechanism
(机制) is the bird’s flexr tendns (屈肌腱) that cnnect muscles t bnes. The flexr tendn stretches, thus
      bending the bird’s tes.
But a recent paper fund that sleeping Eurpean starlings (a cmmn bird fund in Nrth America and Eurpe)
dn’t use the mechanism. The researchers bserved that the birds bent their knees nly slightly, nt enugh fr the
mechanism t kick int actin. The tes, as a result, were largely unbent, and the birds balanced n the central part
f their feet while they slept.
“Birds are varied and unique, exhibiting different bdies, physilgies, and behavirs depending n which

species, genus, r family ne studies. Sleep cycles differ just as widely. While we may nt knw the whle stry
yet, there is n denying that it is remarkable that birds manage this balancing act daily!” said Salama, wh has a
degree in life sciences and bichemistry frm St. Xavier’s Cllege, Mumbai.
      12. What des the underlined wrd “This” in the secnd paragraph refer t?
      A. Birds’ light sleep style.
      B. The variatin in sleep cycles.
      C. Birds’ special brain structure.
      D. The cntinuatin f deep sleep.
      13. What is the rle f flexr tendns in helping birds balance n branches?
      A. Enabling the pwer f birds’ legs.
      B. Stretching t make talns bend and lck.
      C. Cntrlling muscles’ hardness and mvement.
      D. Cnnecting muscles t strengthen their functins.
      14. What can we infer frm Salama’s wrds?
      A. Learning birds’ habits needs cperatin.
      B. Denying birds’ imprtance is unwise.
      C. Studying birds’ sleep has challenges.
D Knwing birds’ balancing acts is useful.
      15. What can be the best title fr the text?
      A. Why D Birds Require Less Sleep?
      B. Why D Eurpean Starlings Sleep Differently?
      C. Why D Sleeping Birds Have One Eye Open?
      D. Why Dn’t Sleeping Birds Fall Off Branches?
