The definitin f the cmmunity has evlved fr me frm childhd t adulthd. My mm was brn in America but bth her parents were frm the Bahamas. It was their culture t take care f the elderly and the sick. And my mm has taught me t care abut thse arund us because we’re all part f the “cmmunity”, an extensin f the family.
When I was 9 years ld, my family mved t Cape Cral, Flrida. Bth Mm and Dad wrked full⁃time, s they signed me up fr an after⁃schl prgram at the Yuth Center. Yuth cunselrs (辅导老师) wuld help me with my hmewrk and play games with me and this was where my interest tk rt. Cmmunity service started with me giving back at the Yuth Center.
Then illness struck at hme. My grandmther had t have heart surgery and needed hspital treatment. This experience brught me vlunteering at Cape Cral Hspital. I asked if I culd learn frm the nurse hw t give my grandma her medicine and it started here.
I lved being at Cape Cral Hspital. I wuld bring paperwrk t dctrs, bring fd t the patients, and make sure the patients were attended. I wuld help direct visitrs t the sickrms. I wuld always tell what wuld cheer the patients up because I had built a relatinship with them and their lved nes. I grew t feel the hspital was part f my cmmunity.

“The first time I came t Zhadng village, I was struck by its natural beauty. The adbe (土坯) hmes fit in perfectly with the green envirnment,” recalls Hansen Nic Rene, a 63⁃year⁃ld retired pliceman. “But when we entered the huses, we fund peple were pr. There was a fireplace, a table and sme chairs.”

After the visit, Hansen suggested that the village use the land behind it t build a farm, and he als participated in the cnstructin wrk himself. “It was a jungle. We brught electricity and water, and then we built a small farm. Nw there are nearly 2,000 pigs and 200 cws. It is still grwing,” Hansen says.
Tday, this farm brings ver 100,000 yuan in incme t the villagers each year. With Hansen’s assistance, the village’s fficials and ther vlunteer wrkers develped characteristic industries, including cattle and sheep breeding and fruit planting. Once peple begin t vlunteer, what leads them t remain in their psitins ver time? T answer this questin, researchers have cnducted fllw⁃up studies where they track vlunteers ver time. Fr instance, ne study fllwed 238 vlunteers in Flrida fr ver a year. One f the mst imprtant factrs that influenced their satisfactin as vlunteers was the suffering they experienced in their vlunteer psitins. The researchers nte that attentin shuld be given t “the training methds that wuld prepare vlunteers fr trublesme situatins r prvide them with strategies fr cping with the prblems they experience”.
Anther study f 302 vlunteers at hspitals in Chicag fcused n individual differences in the degree t which peple viewed the “vlunteer” as an imprtant scial rle.
