2. Why des the authr use -ed instead f -ing here?
Because -ing is used when the actin is dne by the subject f the sentence, while -ed is used when the actin is dne t the subject f the sentence. Here, bth “disappint” and “apprach” are actins is dne t the subjects.

3. What is the difference between the tw grups f sentences?4. Why des the authr chse t use -ed instead f an adverbial clause in the reading passage?
Sentences (a) and (b) cntain -ed as adverbial while sentences (c) and (d) cntain adverbial clauses.
Because –ed makes the sentences shrter and sund mre frmal as written language.
过去分词（短语）作状语
过去分词（短语）可以作状语，表示时间、原因、条件、方式、让步等，表达被动语义或动作的完成，其逻辑主语一般与主句的主语一致。eg Asked why he was late, Tm said it was because f the traffic jam. Exhausted by the lng jurney, Mr Green sn fell asleep. Given mre mney, I will buy anther dress. The wman entered the rm, fllwed by her husband. Laughed at by many ther clleagues, David went n with his plan.
过去分词(短语)作状语时，可转换为对应的状语从句。eg Offered help, we shuld say “Thank yu”. = When we are ffered help, we shuld say “Thank yu”. Grwn in rich sil, these seeds can grw fast. = If they are grwn in rich sil, these seeds can grw fast.
过去分词(短语)作状语时，可在其前加if, nce, althugh等连词，构成“连词+分词”形式。eg If bitten by a snake, yu must ask fr help quickly. Once seen, the painting will be never frgtten. Althugh defeated again, the player still did nt give in. 
Nw find mre sentences with –ed as adverbial in the reading passage.
