    Step 1 Warm up
    1. Ask sme students abut their abilities.
    Teacher: Hell, what can yu d?
    Student 1: I can sing and dance.
    Can yu play the guitar?
    Student 2: Srry, I can't. But I can play chess.
    Which club d yu want t jin?
    Student 1: I want t jin the chess club.
    2. Review.
    Let sme peple play rles in 2c.
    Step 2 Fcus n syntax.
    1 Reading guide:
    2 Students read the sentences in grammar fcus and then fill in the blanks.
    Can yu swim?
    ______ are yu ______?
    ② Yes, I can. / N, I wn't.
    Yes, ___________. / N, I'm _______.
    (See the rest f the questins in the curseware sectin)
    After cmpleting the fill-in-the-blank test, students can pen the textbk t check the answers and strengthen their memry fr the wrng sentences individually.
    Step 3 Summarize
    The teacher presented the pssible usage f mdal verbs n the big screen in the frm f learning plans, s that students culd learn independently and discver their usage.
    1 It can be seen that in the pssible sentence pattern, the mdal verbs can be cnjured withut ________ and _______.
    2 The ability t use mdal verbs t ask abut thers can be summarized in the fllwing sentence patterns:

    The students wrk tgether t discuss the answers and summarize the pssible uses f mdal verbs.

    Step 4 Practice
    1. Lk at 3a, which tells the students t make sentences with the wrds given. First, a mdal verb can be cmbined with the first phrasal verb t frm a general questin and give a negative answer. Then, make an affirmative sentence with the cnjunctins but the secnd phrase.
    The teacher made the first mdel:
    Can Wu Jun speak English? N, he can't, but he can speak Chinese.
    Students try t make a sentence using phrases frm 2-5. They can discuss it with their partners.
    Then have sme students tell their answers t the class.
    Check answers with the class.
    2. Lk at 3b. Tell the students that yur schl is having a schl play next week. What can yu d? Yu can shw yur talent in there. T let all the students knw. We must write a pster. Nw, read the pster belw and try t cmplete the pster with the wrds in the bx.
    Prfread answers and explain where students have questins.
    Step 5 Wrk in grups
    1. What can yur grup d in the schl play? Make a list and reprt it t yur classmates.
    2. First, ask and answer questins in the grup. What can yu d? Fr example.

    S1: Great! What abut yur S3?
    S3: I can sing very well.
    ...
    3. Then make a list tgether.
    4. Everyne in yur grup must write a reprt. Then chse a student t reprt n the grup's abilities.
    In my grup, Li Ming can d kung fu. Zhang Li sings very well. Ma Shuang danced very well...
