We’re always encuraging students t read fictin (小说).
We push them twards the library drs, wave the latest David Walliams bestsellers in their faces and catch them in the passage suggesting they read the latest nvels.
But d we ever pint them in the directin f newper websites, travel guides r histrical reprts?
The ability t read and write isn’t just abut hw ften students pick up bks; it’s als abut the types f texts they read. And that shuld mean as much nn-fictin as fictin.
This des present challenges, as Dug Lemv said in Reading Recnsidered, “Understanding nn-fictin needs a strng base f knwledge, but reading nn-fictin is als ne f the primary ways such a base f knwledge is built.”
This is why we must intrduce nn-fictin t children frm an early age. The mre nn-fictin yung peple read in schl, with the guidance f teachers, the mre chances they will have t build up a large stre f backgrund knwledge t help them understand mre difficult texts later n. T d this, we must give mre lessn time t nn-fictin.
Every teacher in every subject als needs t take respnsibility fr this. Reading has smething t d with all subjects, all f which cme with their wn reading difficulties. Lemv suggests students shuld be given the chance t read mre than ne text n any given tpic. S, when learning abut the Battle f Waterl in histry, why nt read sme articles abut the event? And when studying Dickens in English, why nt read it alngside sme parts chsen frm his wn Sketches by Bz?
Fr nn-fictin t be mst helpful fr students, it shuld be as undiluted as pssible. Texts shuld keep their nn-fictin features (特点) and difficult wrds shuld nt be taken away t create a simpler text. In fact, nn-fictin is ne f the best ways t make students learn difficult wrds.
It is als easy t find a huge number f nn-fictin texts nline. Yu can even share surces with students. This is especially imprtant fr thse students ging int higher educatin.
28. The authr raises the questin in Paragraph 3 t ________.
A. cmpare different ideasB. dubt a cmmn practice
C. shw the necessity f readingD. questin why students read fictin
29. Why shuld teachers spend mre lessn time n nn-fictin?
A. T increase students’ understanding.
B. T get students t study independently.
C. T find excellent students.
D. T make lessns changeable.
30. What des Lemv suggest teachers in every subject d t help students?
A. Teach them t learn frm histry.
B. Help them with reading difficulties.
C. Encurage them t read related articles.
D. Share stries f famus peple with them.
31. What dcs the underlined wrd “undiluted” in the last but ne paragraph mean?
A. Easy.B. Ppular.C. Unexpected.D. Unchanged.

Researchers have knwn fr decades that rcas (逆戟鲸) acrss the Nrth Pacific have harmful pllutants in their system.
Nw, a new study reveals rcas in the western Nrth Atlantic, including thse in the Arctic, are significantly mre plluted than animals in the east—a finding that “shcked” study leader Anaïs Remili, a pstdctral researcher at McGill University in Mntreal. The research strngly pints t their diet playing a majr rle in the level f pllutants, rather than their lcatin.
The study lked at the presence f persistent rganic pllutants, r txic chemicals that degrade slwly and accumulate in the bdy, in the blubber (鲸脂) f rcas acrss the Nrth Atlantic. These pllutants, relics f industrial and agricultural prcesses, “have a tendency t bind t fat,” says Remili, whse study was published in Octber in the jurnal Envirnmental Science & Technlgy. These chemicals weaken rcas’ immune systems, disrupt their endcrine (内分泌) functin, prevent grwth and brain develpment, and even interfere with reprductin.
Pllutants increase as they mve up thrugh the fd chain, and the rcas that cnsume tp predatrs—fr example, thse that primarily eat ther marine mammals rather than fish—are mst plluted. Thanks t their high bdy fat and psitin as apex (最高点) predatrs, rcas are sme f “the mst cntaminated animals n the planet,” Remili says.
Her earlier research shwed that eastern Nrth Atlantic rcas primarily feed n herring (鲱鱼); mid-Nrth Atlantic rcas feed n seals and mackerel (鲭鱼); and western Nrth Atlantic rcas feed n baleen whales, prpises (海豚) and seals.
It makes sense that western Nrth Atlantic rcas wuld have higher pllutants, due t their diet, but “yu wuld expect less cntaminants verall in the Arctic cmpared t industrialized areas,” such as ff the east cast f Nrth America, Remili says.
“We’ve really cme t learn that yu are what yu eat,” says Peter Rss, senir scientist and healthy waters prgram directr at the Raincast Cnservatin Fundatin in British Clumbia, wh wasn’t invlved in the study. “The tp f the fd chain, as illustrated by these lng-lived killer whales, is extremely easy t hurt.”
32. What can we knw accrding t Anaïs Remili’s study?
A. The plluted rcas in the Eastern Atlantic are in the lead.
B. The rcas’ immune system is influenced negatively by chemicals.
C. The blubber f rcas is easy t break dwn and accumulate in the bdy.
D. Orcas’ lcatin is mre imprtant than their diet in the level f pllutants.
33. In paragraph 4, wh is the mst plluted animals n the Earth?
A. Thse feeding n fish.B. Thse feeding n marine plants.
C. Thse feeding n predatrs.D. Thse feeding n marine mammals.
34. What is the paragraph 5 mainly abut?
A. Orcas’ tastes vary frm place t place.
B. Orcas can be particular abut fd.
C. Orcas are fnd f fish and shrimps.
D. Orcas can nly be fund in the Atlantic.
35. What can we infer frm Paragraph 6—7?
A. Orcas’ diet resulted in mre pllutants.
B. The marine fd chain needs t be prtected.
C. Peter Rss participated in the study unwillingly.
D. Pllutants fund in the Arctic rcas are nt the mst.
