I am reading a nvel at the mment, a stry set in Britain and India in the 19th century. It was written by an Indian authr wh nw lives in Denmark, but neither in the language f Hindi nr Danish. Althugh the paperback editin (平装版) I'm hlding was published in New Delhi, India, fur years ag, I, an American, purchased it recently frm a secnd-hand bkshp in Tky, Japan.
That's quite a histry already. But there's mre.
The nvel is a tale f varius mysteries, all expertly put int a well-structured stry by a very skillful authr. Yet my particular cpy presents even mre mysteries than the tale.

I knw this because I fund a receipt f cffee and bread inside. I als knw that this persn was nt the wner f the paperback immediately befre me.
In fact, the wner befre me was nt Indian at all, but Japanese.
I knw this because in the bk there are handwritten ntes in Japanese-translatins f English wrds with which the reader was unfamiliar.
Japanese being a language f characters, nt letters, it is nt easy t determine if the nte writer was a man r a wman. But the care taken t write the translatins neatly in the limited ces available n each page indicates a wman's hand.
S let us agree that it is a wman. What can we say f her? Well educated, clearly, and prbably a university student, wh wuld keep a dictinary at hand while reading a nvel.
But why did she suddenly stp reading? The last translatin in my paperback appears n Page 83, less than a third f the way thrugh the nvel. Did she give up because the bk was prving t difficult? Or was there sme ther reasn?
Many a nvel presents mysteries, all f which are slved by the end f the tale. The mysteries presented by my little paperback, hwever, remain mysteries, all expertly put int a well-structured stry, nt by a skillful writer, but this time by the numberless vagaries (变幻莫测) f life itself.
57. What can we learn abut the nvel?
A. It is abut a wrld trip.B. It is well written.
C. It was written in an American restaurant.D. It was first published in the 19th century.
58. The authr assumes the Japanese wner f the bk was a wman based n ________.
A. the pretty handwritingB. the fd written n the receipt
C. the gd cnditin f the bkD. the effrt taken in writing the ntes

A. He is a great reader f histrical fictin.B. He is a hard-wrking university student.
C. He is a prductive writer with sensibility.D. He is a careful bserver with imaginatin.
60. What's the best title fr the text?
