Mundi was the z’s majr attractin. Her departure caused s much argument that armed guards came t see her ff the island. She was s ppular that peple lined the streets t say gdbye.
Mundi’s new hme is certainly beautiful. After living in the z fr 35 years with n ther elephants, Mundi met B and Tarra, with whm she’s nw sharing 850 acres. She was first hused in a separate place, but she and the ther elephants culd see each ther, and they started getting alng quickly. Sn, Mundi was n lnger separated frm the thers. Scientists are cnfused abut tw newly discvered stars. The tw stars, ne f which was annunced this mnth in the jurnal Nature, send ut lng pulses (脉冲) f radi waves abut every 20 minutes. This means they mve much mre slwly, and they have ther characteristics that astrnmers can’t explain. “We are all still quite amazed,” says astrnmer Natasha Hurley-Walker, wh led the discvery f bth f these surprising surces.
The mystery began in 2021, when Hurley-Walker and her clleagues discvered a slwly repeating radi pulse. It shne fr three mnths. But by the time they discvered it in the recrds, its activity had died dwn, and it had becme invisible in the skies. In a January 2022 paper, the scientists suggested the bject culd be a kind f star called a magnetar (磁陀星). But the bject, with the name GLEAM-X J162759, 5-523504.3, sent ut a pulse every 18 minutes instead f every few secnds like knwn magnetars.
It als had n X-ray signal assciated with the radi emissin (发射), which desn’t fit with magnetar theries. And strangely, the bject’s magnetic field was likely much strnger than previusly seen. S the scientists began lking fr ther similar bjects. In June 2022, Hurley-Walker and her clleagues began bserving the entire visible sky every three nights. Almst immediately, they fund smething that sent ut a radi flash every 21 minutes.
At first glance, it lked similar t the previusly discvered bject. But nce the team began t dig thrugh data fr additinal pulses frm this surce, named GPM J1839-10, the bject nly seemed mre perplexing. Unlike the first star, the signal f J1839-10 was detected ver decades.
Fr nw, researchers assume bth bjects are the same. But why wuld ne flash fr three mnths and the ther fr 33 years and cunting? “I dn’t knw,” says Hurley-Walker. “That’s the prblem.”
28.What can be learned abut the tw newly discvered stars?
A.They were made public in Nature this mnth.
B.They send ut shrt radi waves every 20 minutes.
C.They mve at the slwest speed f all knwn stars.

Scientists have mapped ut ceanic “dead znes” frm the Plicene, abut 5.3 t 2.6 millin years ag, when Earth’s temperature was tw t three degrees higher than tday. This culd ffer insight int the future lcatins and effects f lw xygen areas in a warmer Earth’s ceans.
Oxygen minimum znes, r OMZs, are regins in the cean with lwer xygen levels in the mid waters t supprt marine (海洋的) life. These dead znes play an imprtant rle in the cean’s verall health. “Their lcatins shw where carbn and nitrgen (氮) are available in the cean—s they’re imprtant drivers f nutrient cycles.” says Catherine Davis, assistant prfessr at Nrth Carlina State University.
Being able t predict the lcatin f OMZs is imprtant nt nly fr understanding nutrient cycling but als because f their effects n marine life. Oceanic dead znes restrict the range f animals t the shallw surface cean where xygen is mre plentiful. Davis and her clleagues wanted t figure ut hw a warmer climate might impact future OMZs. S they lked t the Plicene, when the Earth’s atmspheric CO2 levels were clse t what they are nw.
“This is the first glbal spatial recnstructin f xygen minimum znes in the past,” Davis says. “And it’s in line with what we’re already seeing in the Atlantic in terms f lwer xygen levels. Warmer water hlds less xygen. This dead zne map frm the Plicene culd give us insight int what the Atlantic might lk like 100 years frm nw.”
What wuld a future with much less xygen in the Atlantic mean? Accrding t Davis, it culd have a big impact n everything frm carbn strage and nutrient cycling in the cean t hw fisheries and marine species are managed. “OMZs act as a ‘flr’ fr marine animals—they are pushed t the surface,” Davis says. “S fishermen may suddenly see a lt f fish, but it desn’t mean that there are actually mre than nrmal—they’re just being frced int a smaller space.” Fisheries will need t take the effects f OMZs int accunt when managing ppulatins.
32.What des Catherine Davis say abut OMZs?
A.They have lwer carbn levels.B.They may affect the cean’s health.
C.They make Farth’s temperature higher,D.They have the highest xygen levels.
33.Hw d OMZs benefit marine life?
A.They ffer mre xygen.B.They make the climate mre pleasant.
C.They drive animals t areas with mre xygen.D.They attract mre scientists t research the cean.
34.Which field is mst prbably influenced by OMZs?
A.Fishing.B.Farming.C.Educatin.D.Travel.
35.What is a suitable title fr the text?
A.Scientists Have Mapped Future Oceans
B.Animals in the Ocean Will Benefit frm OMZs
C.“Dead Znes” in the Old Times Will Appear Again
D.Map f Ancient Ocean “Dead Znes” Culd Predict Future Ocean
