Eric Carle, the authr and artist behind The Very Hungry Caterpillar and dzens f ther children’s bks, has passed away at the age f 91. Mr. Carle’s lively, creative and clrful wrks were lved by children arund the wrld.
Mr. Carle was the authr r illustratr f ver 70 bks fr children, including The Gruchy Ladybug, The Mixed-Up Chamelen and Papa, Please Get the Mn fr Me. The Very Hungry Caterpillar was Mr. Carle’s best-knwn bk. It was published in 1969. Since then, ver 55 millin cpies f the bk have been sld, and it has been translated int mre than 70 different languages.
Mr. Carle was brn in Syracuse, New Yrk in 1929. His parents were German. As he was grwing up, Mr. Carle spent a lt f time with his father, wh wuld take him ut walking in nature. His father wuld shw him small creatures, explaining their life cycles and filling the yung by’s head with wnder.
Mr. Carle thinks this helps explain why s many f his bks are abut nature. Many are abut bugs like crickets, fireflies, ladybugs and butterflies. Others are abut animals, like fxes, squirrels, kangars and bears.
In 1952, Mr. Carle gt a jb as an artist at the New Yrk Times. Authr Bill Martin, Jr. asked Mr. Carle t illustrate his bk Brwn Bear, Brwn Bear, What D Yu See?, which is Mr. Carle’s first try. The bk came ut in 1967 and was a big hit. After that, he created many children’s bks that were very ppular with his children.
Mst f Mr. Carle’s bks are meant fr yunger readers. He said that he wanted t help make schl a fun and welcming place. “I believe that children are naturally creative and eager t learn,” he said. “I want t shw them that learning is really bth fascinating and fun.”

On Octber 1, 1958, the Natinal Aernautics and Space Administratin (NASA) was fficially established. Since its inceptin, NASA has been interested in explring uter space. Hwever, in the face f climate change, NASA’s mst imprtant task might be its explratin f the earth.
