Jose Alberto Gutierrez抯 life would never be the same again after finding a copy of Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy in the garbage 20 years ago. It happened while he was driving his garbage truck through wealthier neighborhoods at night and seeing deserted books. It sparked his desire to start rescuing books from the garbage. He took home between 50 and 60 books every morning after his nine-hour shift. Eventually, he turned his book collection into a community library.
Colombia抯 capital city of Bogota has 13 million residents and 19 public libraries. However, these libraries
tend to be far away from where rural and poorer communities live. The option of buying new books is non-existent for families struggling to make ends meet. Having access to a library of books and being taken away to another world while immersed in a book is a luxury for the kids who visit Gutierrez抯 library.
Gutierrez grew up poor, and his family could not afford to educate him beyond primary school. Nevertheless,
his mother was a keen reader and read stories to him every night. Her love for books left a deep impression on Gutierrez, who never let a lack of formal education stop him from reading classics by the likes of Victor Hugo, Mario Vargas Llosa and Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
Today, his community library, called 揟he Strength of Words?, occupies most of his home and is piled from
floor to ceiling with fiction and non-fiction titles. Everything from school textbooks to story books can be found

The Strength of Words library opens every weekend. It is not just school-going children who are enjoying the benefits of The Strength of Words library. Adults are also welcome to expand their horizons and develop new skills to build a better life for themselves.
Despite having done so much for his community, Gutierrez is not yet content to call it a day. He continues to
search through bins for reading material and has even travelled to book fairs in Mexico and Chile to sell his idea of building library from unwanted books.

New smart wheelchairs are designed to allow users more freedom of movement. Some even allow them to raise or lower the seats or to go up and down stairs. Now, Scewo, a Swiss company, has designed their futuristic motorized wheelchair Scewo Bro that is a complete solution --This smart wheelchair is so advanced and multi-task that it won the Design Prize in 2021 and has been recognized as a pioneer in the medical technology industry.

allows users to deal with different terrains without the risk of tipping over. Besides, the foot rests, seat, and arm rests are designed to be comfortable and adjustable.
The smart wheelchair can go up to 35 kilometers on one charge and can go 10 kilometers per hour. If a break
is needed, just put the chair into the relaxation position. The smart wheelchair comes with two secure storage areas for people on the go to store valuables. It can fit in the trunk of a car and can be charged in just five hours, whose awesomeness is more than you expected.
Scewo Bro is available in Switzerland, Austria, and Germany. While the first batch (首批) has sold out,

On a sunny day last August, Daniel Malechuk opened the door to a 77,000-square-foot warehouse just outside Atlanta. Inside, under the crucial glow of LED lights, grew five varieties of hydroponic (水培的) lettuce with nine levels high. A handful of employees were busy harvesting the greens. Their pace matched Malechuk抯 ambition: to grow 10 million heads of lettuce by next spring.
If they succeed, Kalera, the vertical farming company that began operations here in April 2022, will not only
have the largest-yield vertical farm in the Southeast, but will also be Georgia抯 largest lettuce producer.
揟his facility will produce 12 times as much lettuce in one year as the entire state can produce in the same amount of time,? Malechuk said. These farms, not dependent on specific weather patterns, can grow almost anywhere, cutting down transportation costs and associated emissions. And importantly, they operate more cleanly, without producing runoff from fertilizers or pesticides.
Malechuk, of Kalera farms, has said making his greens affordable is a top priority and that a head of Kalera
lettuce sells for less than $3 in most stores. But there抯 a catch: indoor farms rely on the artificial light of tens of thousands of LED lights. Add to that the energy needed for climate control, water circulation and other operations, and a farm like Malechuk抯 can consume massive amounts of energy.
揟he single largest challenge facing the industry is that it uses a huge amount of electricity,? said Julia
Kurnik, director of innovation startups at the World Wildlife Fund. She said vertical farming involves a series of economic and environmental trade-offs (权衡). 揑t may not make sense everywhere, but if you抮e in, say, the
Middle East and you don抰 have much land, but you can use renewable energy to power your farm, this may be a
huge boon (益处).? She said the source of the energy is crucial to determining the net environmental impact.
Lowering vertical farms? energy costs is one of the main goals at Signify, a Dutch LED lighting company, said Udo van Slooten, CEO of the Signify.
32. What may be a key factor for indoor farming?
A. Weather. B. Location. C. Energy. D. Transportation.
33. What is an important goal of Malechuk?
A. To lower the electricity costs.
B. To make his greens cheaper.
C. To become the largest lettuce producer.
D. To protect the environment of the country.
34. What is Julia Kurnik抯 attitude to the vertical farming?
A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. Uncaring.
35. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Vertical Farms Are Branching Out.
B. Kalera Succeeded in Growing Lettuce Indoors.
C. New Technologies Are Being Applied in Agriculture.
D. The Largest Challenge Facing Vertical Farming.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The average cost of an iPhone has climbed up, and even the most affordable Android devices come with a
rising price. 36 It is wise to pay close attention to the best practices for extending the life of your smartphone.
Fortunately, there are several ways to do this.
Remove unnecessary apps and photos.
When the storage and capabilities of the smartphone are being maxed out,the phone will become much less
responsive. 37 To avoid this, make sure that you regularly remove any apps, photos, documents or text
messages that you do not actually need.
38
Put your phone on the charger (充电器) when it reaches a battery life of 75 percent. Waiting until the battery
life drops to 25 percent will dramatically reduce its ability to receive and hold a charge. Using up your battery and then charging it back to 100 percent is a bad idea. Your phone will last a lot longer if you charge it for a few minutes off and on throughout the day.
Don抰 exercise carrying your smartphone with you.
Some phone users have experienced water damage issues as a result of sweating while their phone was in their pocket or fastened to their arm. This problem becomes worsened by the unwillingness of the phone company
to cover even minimal water damage under their guarantee program. 39
Take advantage of cloud storage.
40 This will minimize the risk of data loss if something does go wrong. Take advantage of any free cloud storage that comes with your smartphone and perform backups on a regular basis to receive the best results.
A. Power down regularly.
B. Keep the battery in good condition.
C. But it may not be in your best interests to use them.
D. It often convinces people to upgrade before they truly need to.
E. It helps your phone never become overloaded with too much data.
F. So it does not make sense to take the risk of harming it with sweat.
G. Are you wasting your money by replacing your mobile phone annually?

I used to like staying overnight at my Grandma抯 house ? that was, until Grandma started telling me how wonderful my cousin Maya was. Then it was Maya this and Maya that until I didn抰 ever want to hear another word about her.
That was why I wasn抰 too excited when Grandma called me on the phone to 揷ome on over and bring your
pajamas.? When I got there, it was worse than I抎 expected. There, in Grandpa抯 big leather rocker, sat Maya, all dressed up and formal-looking and wearing fancy shoes as if she抎 just been to a party.
揝urprise, Kristen!? Grandma said. 揧our cousin Maya and her parents have traveled in from the East Coast
on business. Maya gets to stay with us this afternoon.? Grandma chattered away about how excited she抎 been for this surprise get-together, and how cousins ought to get to know each other better.
I hung my baseball cap in the closet and set my backpack by the stairway, all the time smiling and nodding as
if I抎 been waiting forever for this chance to spend an afternoon with Maya. Grandpa抯 chair squawked (咯咯叫) as Maya rocked back and forth. It was the chair I liked best in the house, the one I usually sat in. I sat down on the sofa across from her.
Shortly, Grandma went off to the kitchen to 搒ee about some lunch,? she抎 said. That left me stuck in the
living room with rocking Maya.
She was still small but taller than I抎 remembered her from her last visit four years ago. She was good at small talk, though, and was chatting away about how nice it was to see me again. But I could tell that she didn抰 really think so. The last time she was here, we抎 had hours of fun together building caves out of Grandma抯 sofa pillows.
After that, I抎 heard about her only through Grandma抯 tales. Maya taking piano lessons. Maya learning math.
Maya, Maya, Maya. Now Maya was here, looking great with the latest haircut and a fancy dress.

Dear fellow students,
As is known to all, it is health that really matters in the process of our learning and growth. Therefore, I appeal to every individual to take action in order to improve our physical and mental health.
Balancing our study and life always comes first, for only by doing so can we refresh ourselves to greet the new day ahead. Besides, it is also a must to participate in a variety of extracurricular activities, which can definitely relieve us of stress. Plus, doing voluntary work is bound to make a big difference.
Let's keep healthy both physically and mentally together!
A Possible Version:
Glancing down at my jeans and my old sneakers, I wished I hadn’t come. A rush of shame flooded over me as I compared myself to Maya-Grandma’s favorite. She was smarter, prettier, and more talented than I could ever hope to be. The thought of being loved less by Grandma because of Maya was unbearable. “I hear you like to skate,” Maya’s words crashed through my thoughts. What she announced was totally beyond my expectation. Astonished and speechless, I wondered how she knew about my skating. “I hear you are the captain of your basketball team. Even better, you are always competitive and aggressive in any sports activities,” she exclaimed, her eyes full of envy and admiration.
“How do you know all these things about me?” I asked. Shrugging and looking down, Maya told me that my Grandma wrote about me in her letters and that I was her favorite person to write about. Numb with shock, I stared at Maya’s face, and the only thing that came to my mind was, “You won the first prize in the math competition, didn’t you?” Maya looked up, confused. I explained that my Grandma talked about her all the time. We laughed, chatted about everything, and had fun building caves out of Grandma’s sofa pillows. Time flew by, and as Maya and her parents drove off, Grandma and I waved goodbye until they were out of sight. “Isn’t Maya a lovely child!” Grandma grinned. “She’s really nice,” I agreed, now understanding that Grandma had two favorites.
