                                   Make a speech about China's aid to other countries

     

             Analysis of teaching material

    The topic of this unit, which comes from New Senior English for China (2019), Student’s Book4, is Sharing. It aims to help Ss understand the importance of sharing & volunteering as well as inspire them to go volunteering

    There are mainly six sections in this unit---Reading & Thinking, Learning About Language, Review Useful Structure, Using Language (Listening & Speaking; Reading & Writing), Assessing Your Progress, Video Time. The lesson I’m going to talk about is a combination of Reading & Writing, the fourth period of this unit. The reading text “Make a speech about China’s aid to other countries”,  contains vocabularies, key sentences & structure students are supposed to learn to help make their own speech about China’s aid to other countries; besides, it make Ss understand the significance of China’s aid & volunteering.

             Analysis of students

    They’re from Senior Two in their second term. Although they have learnt the words and expressions related to the topic of this unit and got some knowledge about sharing in Reading & Thinking, they may still have problems in their reading skills and making a speech on China’s aid & volunteering in English freely. Therefore, they need more chances to practise reading & writing skills and equip themselves with the ability to make a speech about China’s aid & volunteer work.

             Teaching aims (4-dimension objectives)

    1. Language competence(语言能力)

        a. Ss master the words & expressions and structure in writing a speech about China’s aid & volunteering.

        b. Ss read the speech about China’s aid for writing.

        c. Ss can make a speech on China’s aid to other countries, express personal views or feelings and try to interact with the audience by asking rhetorical questions.

    B.  Learning ability(学习能力)

        a. Ss get the ability to learn & collect vocabulary by using classification & association, building their own lexical semantic network.

        b. Ss can tell the role of phrases in a sentence & discourse and enable themselves to use phrases & sentence patterns to enrich their writing.

        c. Ss master the writing methods of China’s aid & volunteering.

    C.  Cultural awareness(文化意识)

        a. Ss learn the story of China’s aid to other countries and establish the awareness to build a community with a shared future for mankind.

    b. Ss take pride in our motherland & strengthen their cultural confidence.

    D.  Thinking quality(思维品质)

        a. Ss can make an analysis based on facts.

        b. Ss can evaluate the role & significance of China’s aid & volunteering in the donor’s & recipient’s perspective.

             Teaching important & difficult points

    A.  The important points

        a. Develop Ss’ speech writing skills.

        b. Guide Ss to make our own speech structure.

        c. Guide Ss to use expressions learned to tell China’s stories well.

    B.  The difficult points

    a. Ss tell the stories of China’s aid to other countries without full preparations.

    b. Enable Ss to creatively organize what they’ve learned in class to write their own speech on China’s aid.

    Teaching methods: cooperative learning (group work & pair work) & task-based teaching methods

    Teaching media: multimedia platform; blackboard; PPT

    Teaching procedures  

     

    Requirements:

     A. Ss write their own speech on China’s aid to Ghana in pair work according to the given material.

       B. S1: content1+3, S2: content2 in 5 mins; then integrate & polish the speech together in 3 mins.

    Requirements:

    A. A boy & a girl representative present their speech respectively. (4 mins)

    B. Read aloud my own speech & make our own sample structure with Ss. (3 mins)
