You bet I will.Text 2M: The film museum is one of the most modern buildings in that city, isn’t it?W:Yes.It was designed by a very famous expert.Text 3M:Could you give me a ride to the Museum of Modern Art on your way to the office?W:Sorry,I’m not going to the office today. You might ask Linda. She’s leaving later.Text 4W:What can I do for you?M:I want a ticket to New York. How can I get there as soon as possible?W:This afternoon there’s a flight leaving at 3:30,arriving in at 6:30.Is that OK?M:That’s fine.Text 5W:Should I take a taxi or a bus to the town centre?M:You can take either, but the train goes directly there. It’s cheaper,too.W:Thanks.I’ll do that instead.Text 6W:Aren’t you going to say “hello” to me?M:I beg your pardon? Susan. My Gosh!Is it really you?W:Well,I’m not a ghost.M:I’m so glad to see you.Are you going to the meeting, too?W:Of course.I didn’t expect to meet you on this train. I was feeling very nervous about going there all by myself.M:I had no idea you were coming.Er ...what are you busy with these days?W:Nothing different. What about you? Do you still work there? Such young people like you should have a bright future!M:I’m considering working somewhere else, but I haven’t decided yet.Text 7W:Hello,John.My computer has stopped!Well, not completely stopped, but it doesn’t start up sometimes.M:You mean nothing on the screen?W:I switched it on this morning and there was this strange noise and nothing on the screen.I turned it off and tried again and it worked okay until a few minutes ago. Then the screen went dark.M:Any unusual noises?W:Yes.The strange noise started again.M:Are you at your machine now?W:I’m sitting here in front of it now.M:Is it switched on?W:Yes.M:Okay.Now,try shaking the connection between the computer and the screen.W:Ah.It’s dark. The screen’s up again.Oh,I see, the connector was loose.Text 8W:Welcome to my grandparents’ farm!M:We’re glad to be here. It’s really beautiful!W:Yes,it is.M:No pollution! Not many cars and in fact, not much traffic of any kind!Where are your grandparents?W:My grandma is preparing breakfast while my grandpa is working in the field. He works for two hours before he has breakfast.Let me show you around the farm before breakfast.M:That’s fine.W:My grandparents’ farm is a small one. They have twenty cows, about three hundred hens and they keep some pigs as well. They grow wheat, potatoes and some vegetables.M:Oh,you’ve got a lovely farmhouse,Alice.W:Yes,it was built almost two hundred years ago. It’s very old-fashioned,but my grandparents don’t want to change it.They have lived here for almost forty years.Text 9W:I can’t decide whether to go to university or get a job. What do you think?M:Well,if I were you,I’d go on studying.W:But I don’t even know what to study.M:If I had the chance again,I’d study computers. You’re good at science subjects.W:That’s what my parents want me to do.M:You should take their advice. They know that’s the best for you.W:But my friends will have jobs and lots of fun while I spend all my time studying.M:But if you go to university, you’ll still have time for fun.W:Um,what you say makes sense. But,you know,I still have to ask my parents for pocket money and I hate to do so at this age.M:If you try to find a part-time job,you will have some money, too.W:You’re right.Thank you for the advice.Text 10M:I remember that when I was in my teens,I used to disobey many rules my parents told me. For example,my parents were very particular about the friends I went out with, always warning me that “one rotten apple could ruin a whole basket of apples.”When I wanted to sleep with my pet dog Peppy, they immediately said NO because they thought that I would be bitten by fleas.Today, however,I am also the father of a boy of fifteen, and I find that I,too,am pressuring my son with a lot of rules that he seems to find hard to follow. The other day,I noticed that my son’s hair was too long,so I told him to have it cut short.Ordinarily,he is fairly obedient (顺从的),but this time he put his foot down.“What’s wrong with long hair?”he said,“I don’t think you have the right to order me to cut it short, even if you’re my father.”When I was a boy,if I had spoken like this to my father,I know that he would have given me a good beating. But I suddenly realized that we are now living in a more liberal world, and that my son’s wearing his hair long was merely an example of the generation gap that existed between us.So I give in, and so he still wears his hair long.
