A terrible thing happened t me while I was watching TV recently: I realized that I had aged. Nw f curse I knw that I am aging; it’s just that I hadn’t realized quite hw ld I was until I saw a participant wh I recgnized n a reality TV shw. Well, I didn’t recgnize her, but I recgnized her name. I’d slightly knwn her in my 20s when she’d been the celebrity wh had stlen my rmmates’ byfriends.
Hwever, here’s the thing that shcked me — I hadn’t recgnized her because rather than the beauty I remembered, n my TV was a middle-aged mum cking. And then it hit me: that’s what I lk like t.

Occasinally, we might get a rude awakening when suddenly ur bdies stp wrking as expected but, fr the mst part, we’re left t get n with grwing ld withut t many reminders. But when yu get a ! Since that shw aired, I have sat in frnt f the mirrr analyzing my face and wndering hw I came t lk s like my mther withut nticing. I’ve als realized that my waist n lnger fits int baby fat but a middle-aged spread.
I als fear that I dn’t knw what middle age lks like fr my generatin. Did my mther still feel 24 when in reality she was 15 years lder? And why d I nt feel like I’m where I shuld be as I apprach 40? I definitely remember writing a list f things I will have achieved by the time I’m 40 at 19. Where is the huse in the Suth f France r the Prsche 911 she s desperately wanted?
Since then, I’ve started t redefine myself. I dn’t want t put everything dwn t age, but I can’t quite stp myself. Tired again? Must be my age. Thank Gd then fr scial media. All arund me I see amazing wmen at the ther end f their 40s. They’ve accepted their age and seem t lve it, s I’m hpeful that as I mve int the next decade, that will be me t. As a yung child, I was painfully shy. I'd watch ther children play in the park, wishing I culd jin them, but I was t scared t apprach. Eventually, my mther wuld cme t the rescue. She'd ask the ther kids if I culd play, t. Tday, I feel cmfrtable giving public lectures in large halls and having cnversatins in small grups, but I still tend t avid situatins in which I'm expected t spend time with a rmful f strangers.
There culd be many reasns. Fr ne thing, I might be carrying sme childhd fear f rejectin. But beynd that pssibility, ne likely element is that I tend t underestimate hw much peple like me after I meet them, as mst f us d.

In ding s, they discvered a new cgnitive illusin(认知错觉)they call “the liking gap”: ur failure t realize hw much strangers appreciate ur cmpany after a bit f cnversatin.

In each circumstance, peple cnsistently underestimated hw much thers liked them. Fr much f the academic year, as drmitry mates gt t knw each ther and even started t develp enduring friendships, the liking gap persisted.
The data als revealed sme f the ptential reasns fr the illusin: we are ften mre severe with urselves than with thers, and ur inner critic prevents us frm appreciating hw psitively ther peple evaluate us. Nt knwing what ur cnversatin partners really think f us, we use ur wn thughts as a prxy(代理人). This is a mistake, because ur thughts tend t be mre negative than reality.

    C. T shw an example f why peple are shy f cmmunicatin.
    D. T emphasize the imprtant rle f a mther in ne's childhd.
33.What des the underlined wrd “unfunded” prbably mean?
    A. Careless. B. Baseless. C. Selfless. D. Meaningless.
34.What d we knw abut the liking gap frm the text?
    A. It indicates what strangers really think f us.
    B. It begins and ends quickly amng strangers.
    C. It disappears when strangers get t knw each ther.
    D. It states ur misunderstanding f hw much thers like us.
35.Which f the fllwing is the best title fr this text?
    A. Peple Like Yu Mre than Yu Knw
    B. Hw t Get Alng Well with Strangers
    C. The Way t Knw What Others Think f Us
    D. Having Cnversatins with Strangers Benefits Us
