I turned my watch ff, thinking that wuld allw me t enjy my surrundings and find the peace I expected, but I wrried I was underperfrming. “Why can’ t I let g and just enjy myself?” I wndered. But after sme intrspectin(反省), I realized why I was struggling—bth n trail runs and in graduate schl.
Ging int my Ph. D. , I had thught that my slid undergraduate track recrd wuld set me up fr instant success. T my surprise, I was wrng. I lacked cnfidence in my research abilities which I thught stpped me perfrming well and I cnstantly felt my prgress was t slw. Other students’ self-cnfidence and their excellent results made me feel insecure. Finally, ne day I brke dwn in tears in my adviser’ s ffice.
Then came my visit hme: I was having truble because I hadn’ t prperly adjusted my expectatins t the differences between an urban run and a trail run.
A Ph. D. is like a trail run: Smetimes yu can run fast. Smetimes yu might find yurself climbing up a steep, winding trail at a snail’ s pace. And that’ s OK. Barriers are unavidable, and success lks and feels different n a challenging trail than it des n a smth, flat path. Smetimes it’ s best t take a deep breath and d yur best t meet the challenge.

Fr many white-cllar wrkers arund the wrld, the recent widespread disease has meant having t wrk frm hme. Their usual ffice lcatin has been lcked. This means different practices, which have advantages and disadvantages fr emplyees. But the big questin is, will they ever see their ffices again?
Hme wrking has made peple realize what tasks they can perfrm at hme, rather than ging regularly t the ffice t d the same thing. It has given them mre time with the family; they've been sleeping better and have saved mney by nt travelling r buying lunches n the g. And recent evidence suggests the majrity f peple wrking frm hme d as well and achieve as much as befre.
Fr sme peple, this culd be a lasting arrangement. In the UK, fifty f the biggest emplyers questined by the BBC, have said they have n plans t return all staff t the ffice full-time in the near future. Of curse, ne main reasn is that firms culdn't see a way f accmmdating large numbers f staff while scial distancing rules were still in place. But the BBC als heard that sme smaller businesses are deciding t abandn their ffices cmpletely.
Other bigger cmpanies are als lking at winding up ffices t save mney as many jbs can be perfrmed remtely. Peter Cheese, head f the Chartered Institute f Persnnel and Develpment, tld the RBC: "We are at a mment f real change in the wrld f wrk, driven by big existing risks.”
But this isn't great news fr everyne. Sme emplyees can feel lnely at hme, and there's less pprtunity t netwrk r team frm ther peple, especially if they're a new wrker. Als, city centers may suffer mst frm a change in wrking habits. Shps and cafes rely n the ftfall f ffice wrkers, and withut them, they face clsure. The future is still uncertain, which is why it may be t early t say where ur desks will be permanently lcated. But the ffice f the future may be yur hme.
28.What's the gd news fr cmpanies allwing hme wrking?
    A. They dn't pay as many salaries as befre.
    B. They dn't have t pay rent fr ffice.
    C. Their emplyees spend mre time with family.
    D. Their mst emplyees wrk just as prductively.

30.What is the authr's attitude twards wrking frm hme?

31.Which can be a suitable title fr the text?
    A. Changeable wrking habits? B. The end f the ffice?
    C. When t return t the ffice?D. Uncertain future f wrk?
    D
Tree planting used t be regarded as an effective means f cntrlling climate change. Perhaps it's time fr us t rethink this practice. Trees pull carbn dixide r CO2 frm the air. This effectively remves CO2 frm the atmsphere, making trees an imprtant part f the fight against climate change. But trees nly hld nt carbn dixide as lng as they're alive. Once they die, trees decay (腐烂) and release that CO2 back int the atmsphere.
Recent studies have fund that trees arund the wrld are grwing faster than ever. Rising atmsphere CO2 is prbably driving that rapid grwth, said Rel Brienen. High levels f this gas are bsting temperatures, which in turn speeds tree grwth in thse areas, he added. The faster trees grw, the faster they stre carbn. It seems like gd news. Hwever, it is knwn that fast-grwing tree species, in general, live shrter lives than their slw-grwing relatives.
In rder t see whether this is a universal phenmenn, Brienen and his clleagues analyzed ver 210,000 individual tree ring recrds f 110 tree species frm mre than 70,000 sites wrldwide.“By measuring tree rings' widths ne can tell hw fast trees grew, while cunting rings prvides infrmatin n tree ages and allws making inferences abut trees' maximum lifespan (寿命).” Brienen explained.
The team als created a cmputer prgram that mdeled a frest. Early n, it shwed that “the frest culd hld mre carbn as the trees grew faster”, Brienen reprted. But after 20 years, these trees started dying and lsing this extra carbn again. “We must understand that the nly slutin t bringing dwn CO2 levels is t stp emitting (排放) it int the atmsphere,” said Brienen.
    32. What is the first paragraph mainly abut?
    A. Where carbn dixide r CO2 is.
    B. Whether trees will be planted r nt.
    C. Why the atmsphere can remve carbn dixide.
    D. Why trees against climate change shuld be rethught.
    33. Why are trees grwing faster than ever accrding t recent studies?
    A. They give ff and stre lts f CO2.
    B. They belng t fast-grwing species.
    C. Increasing atmspheric CO2 may help them.
    D. The surrunding trees may affect them.
    34. Accrding t tree rings' widths, we can knw a tree's_______.
    A. age B. height C. grwth speed D. tp lifespan
    35. What might be talked abut in the fllwing paragraph?
    A. Why the team funded the cmputer prgram.
    B. Why the faster trees grw, the lnger they live.
    C. Hw t make the ld trees live a little lnger.
    D. Hw t prevent dying trees emitting their extra carbn.

One June evening, Sylvia, 8, was driving her cw hme thrugh the wds. Suddenly a clear whistle brke the peace.
