My daughter Kelly is a cautius persn. She needs t warm up t situatins, and is hesitant t try new things. When with clse friends, she becmes a leader wh laughs ludly and chants. “Girls rule, bys drl.” But when that cmfrt zne is nt arund her, she is shy and nervus.
This has been challenging fr me at times. “Shy” is nt a wrd that I think has ever been used t describe me. But this has been a year f firsts fr my girl that has filled her with a new sense f cnfidence. This year she mved t lap lane in swimming where she was preparing fr a swim team. This year she learned t ride a bike withut training wheels. And this year she cmpleted her first kids' triathln (三项全能)．
On Saturday, with a thunderstrm cming sn and my sn's birthday party later in the day, we all went ut in the dark f the mrning fr Kelly t participate in her first triathln. We
practiced transitins frm swim t bike t run with her, we gt all the equipment she'd need, and we kept talking abut the race. But as we waited the tw hurs fr the lder kids t finish befre her turn, she held my leg a little harder and tld me she lved me a few t many times. She was nervus but trying t keep it tgether.
And then it was her turn. Frm the secnd she jumped int the water, my heart sared. My daughter transfrmed int the mst cnfident human being I had ever seen. She dminated that swim, crushed that bike ride and ran t the finish with the biggest smile n her face.
I can hnestly say that I never felt s prud f smene in my entire life. It wasn't because she did a sprt r anything like that. It was because she was afraid f smething and cnquered that fear with cnfidence and a fire I hadn't seen befre.
All day I wuld find myself just lking ver at her and smiling. She might be wearing the finalist medal but I felt like I wn that day. I wn the chance t see my girl shine.
